The Janitorial Technician (Hybrid) is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and dignified environment at the Tamarac Family Emergency Non-Congregate Shelter while assisting with laundry readiness and room turnover for new guest arrivals. This dual-role supports day-to-day sanitation, infection-control practices, supply readiness, and rapid room flipping between family stays in alignment with Tamarac shelter procedures, OSHA and safety expectations, and recognized custodial quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of restrooms, kitchens, common areas, parking lots and residential spaces.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and disinfect all assigned areas.
  • Restock supplies including soap, paper products, and cleaning materials.
  • Remove trash and recycling, ensuring proper disposal.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laundry room, including lint trap cleaning, spill cleanup, and daily equipment checks.
  • Follow all OSHA, ADA, HOST, Tamarac shelter, and infection-control procedures, including high-touch surface disinfection and safe cleaning practices.
  • Must complete all required training provided by HOST and Bayaud Works.
  • Safely operate custodial equipment and use approved cleaning chemicals according to training, product labels, SDS guidance, dilution requirements, PPE expectations, and storage procedures.
  • Prevent cross-contamination by using designated tools and supplies appropriately across restrooms, laundry areas, food/common areas, and guest rooms.
  • Assist with special cleaning projects, including floor care, deep cleaning, and seasonal tasks.
  • Maintain accurate logs of cleaning tasks and supply usage.
  • Participate in routine quality checks, report deficiencies, and complete corrective cleaning actions when areas do not meet shelter cleanliness standards.
  • Provide excellent customer service to residents and staff.
  • Support laundry operations as assigned.
  • Sort, wash, dry, and fold large volumes of laundry including bedding, and towels, as needed.
  • Operate commercial-grade washers and dryers safely and efficiently.
  • Track laundry inventory and ensure clean linens are available for staff to use during room turnovers.
  • Prepare guest rooms for new family arrivals by cleaning, sanitizing, and resetting units after check-out.
  • Strip and replace linens, restock toiletries, remove waste, clean visible soil, and sanitize high-touch surfaces, fixtures, furniture, and equipment to shelter standards.
  • Coordinate with facilities and shelter teams to ensure units are flipped efficiently and on schedule.
  • Report any damages or maintenance needs discovered during the room flipping process.
  • Escalate biohazard concerns, bodily fluid cleanup needs, pest concerns, or specialized cleaning needs to facilities leadership in accordance with site procedure.
  • Ensure each flipped room meets trauma-informed and dignified shelter presentation standards.
  • Respect resident privacy and minimize disruption when working in or around occupied shelter spaces.
  • Assist with room checks conducted by Shelter Operations team as scheduled.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Senior Facilities Manager.
  • Knowledge of custodial and room turnover practices in residential or shelter environments.
  • Ability to handle cleaning chemicals and equipment safely.
  • Strong attention to detail, quality-control standards, cleaning documentation, and corrective action follow-through.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively under time-sensitive conditions.
  • Commitment to equity, dignity, and trauma-informed shelter care.
  • Professional, respectful communication with residents, staff, vendors, and community partners in a 24/7 shelter environment.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1 year custodial, housekeeping, or janitorial experience required.
  • Experience with room turnover in hospitality, shelters, or housing programs preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Must be able to pass a background check for work with vulnerable populations.
  • Must be able to obtain ISSA certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, and moving equipment.
  • Regularly required to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Work performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
