The Certified Athletic Trainer II specializes in five practice areas or domains: prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and immediate care of athletic injuries; rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries; healthcare administration; and professional development. The Athletic Trainer II in either of two settings: in the community (high school, collegiate, local sports teams and community sporting events) or in the clinic-setting. The clinic-based Athletic Trainer II will have an expectation of supporting community walk in clinics and community sporting events, in addition to their primary role in the clinic.
As part of a complete healthcare team, the Certified Athletic Trainer II works under the direction of a licensed physician and works in cooperation with other healthcare professionals, athletic directors, coaches, and parents. The Certified Athletic Trainer II assumes responsibility for professional growth and maintains a high level of professional expertise.
Requirements
~1 min read• Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) approved program.
• Master’s degree in athletic training preferred
• 3-5 years’ experience as a certified athletic trainer preferred
• BCLS certification is required
• Licensed as an Athletic Trainer in good standing for the State of Michigan is required within 90 days of hire
• As required provides duties consistent with the certified athletic trainer scope of practice to include, but not limited to: injury prevention, injury recognition, injury evaluation and referral, emergency care, rehabilitation and reconditioning, athletic training administration / athlete continuum of care documentation and professional development
• Routinely tracks outcomes and reports information to network manager.
• Develop, plan and implement community education programming centered around sports medicine and health and wellness.
• Operate independently at sports-related injury walk-in clinics or other community sporting events
• Involvement in department and interdepartmental meetings and committees.
• Acts as physician extender and collaborates with physicians and physical therapists within the sports medicine clinic setting to coordinate athlete and patient care.
• Communicates regularly with coaches, parents and administrators to coordinate student athlete injury care.
• Participates in the development and implementation of goals and tactics designed to grow the sports medicine program.
• Triage patients.
• Perform physical assessment.
• Gather medical history.

• Fit for crutches.
• Wrap injured area.
• Provide education to patients and family.
• Develop continued care/strengthening programs.
• Present in community on medical conditions/injury prevention.
• Complete the New Hire Athletic Trainer Expectations Check List within 90 days.
Additional Duties for clinic-based Certified Athletic Trainer II:
• Casting
• Serve as scribe to physicians
• Serve as physician extender
• Will coordinate patient services including self-care and develop of home programs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Partner with practice leadership to foster community relationships, promote outreach initiatives, and improve coordination of care across the continuum.
