Adjunct Teaching — Nursing — Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Program

Candidates must meet the requirements of one of the following pathways, and the required degree must be completed by the start date:

• Advanced Practice Provider. Master’s degree in nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner focus, or a master’s degree as a Physician Assistant. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or PhD preferred. Current, unencumbered APRN or PA license in the State of Utah with current national certification.
• Physician. MD or DO with current, unencumbered license to practice in the State of Utah, and board certification in family medicine, emergency medicine, or a related specialty.
• Sonographer. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credential through ARDMS, or equivalent registry credential, with a bachelor’s degree or higher.

At least three years of clinical experience using point-of-care ultrasound in practice, and demonstrated experience teaching ultrasound image acquisition and interpretation to learners.

• Formal POCUS certification is preferred but not required. Examples include the POCUS Fundamentals Certificate and clinical certifications through the Point-of-Care Ultrasound Certification Academy, such as the Primary Care (CP-PC) certification, or comparable training through AIUM or an accredited POCUS fellowship or certificate program.
• Experience with handheld ultrasound devices is preferred. This course uses Butterfly iQ handheld ultrasound probes and the associated Butterfly imaging application.

Responsibilities include the following:

• Teach a weekly two-hour point-of-care ultrasound laboratory for a cohort of approximately 15 graduate FNP students
• Instruct students in probe handling, equipment operation, image acquisition, and image optimization using Butterfly handheld ultrasound devices.
• Teach POCUS applications relevant to primary care, including cardiac, lung and pleural, abdominal, aorta, renal and bladder, soft tissue and musculoskeletal, and obstetric assessment.
• Teach image interpretation and the integration of POCUS findings into clinical decision making, including the limitations of point-of-care imaging and appropriate referral for comprehensive diagnostic imaging.
• Supervise hands-on scanning practice, providing direct observation and individualized feedback to students.
• Evaluate student competency through image review, skills checkoffs, and practical examination.
• Collaborate with the course coordinator and program faculty on course delivery and achievement of student learning outcomes.
• Travel is required to teach the course in person and on campus each week.

The laboratory will be held on either Wednesday or Thursday; the specific day and time will be finalized with the program prior to the start of the semester.

This position is approximately 4–5 hours per week, which includes two hours of scheduled instruction plus preparation, evaluation, and student feedback. Actual workload may vary week to week.
