Reporting to the Senior Specialist, Damage Prevention, this position is responsible for developing awareness about locating, working around and performing excavations around ATCO’s Electric & Natural Gas to contractors, the general public and ATCO Employees in order to mitigate risk of damages and potential for personal or public harm.

Responsibilities

  • Actively promote Safety and Public Awareness around all of ATCO’s overhead, above ground and underground infrastructure.

  • Promote Safety and Public Awareness within the excavation community, locating community and with ATCO Employees.  Lead by example and convey ATCO’s Safety Values and best practices.

  • Proactively raise awareness by building and promoting positive relationships with landowners, internal and external excavators, through community involvement, participation in tailgates, committees, consortiums and public speaking engagements. 

  • Understanding of applicable work instructions, OH&S legislation and other applicable regulations which relate to Electric and Natural Gas facilities.

  • Perform investigation/follow up on overhead contacts, hit-lines and near miss damages which could include gathering information through witness statements, completing an investigation report, provide mitigating solutions and ongoing coaching.

  • Document, analyze and establish statistical data and trending to support, and measurably validate the Damage Prevention action plan to reduce contacts with Electric and Natural gas infrastructure.

  • Manage public inquiries in the field, during presentations, public engagement sessions or over the phone about Damage Prevention initiatives, process and learnings. 

  • Confidently provide Damage Prevention support regarding Electric & Natural Gas safety, such as overhead clearances, locate requirements, excavation requirements and best practices. 

 

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Post secondary education or coursework in communications, facilitation, leadership, business or a related field is considered an asset

  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation, or actively working toward obtaining the designation

  • Minimum 3 years of related experience

  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License is required

  • Ability to meet requirements for safety-sensitive position

  • Familiarity with Work Instructions and their relevance to OH&S regulations

  • Analytical skills and comprehension of the locate contracts

  • Must have excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills, sound judgment, self-initiative, ability to build relationships and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Strong commitment to promoting safety through training, coaching and ongoing engagement with employees, contractors and external stakeholders.

  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook with the ability to learn new applications as required and ability to work with enterprise systems and databases will become necessary

  • Project management and organizational skills with an ability to coordinate and prioritize workload and meet deadlines.

  • Comfort and ability to speak in front of groups, whether providing training or conducting presentations.

  • Ability to travel after hours when required
