Public Health Nurse - School Nurse

Under the general direction of the Community Public Health Supervisor, provides nursing services to identified students and families. Serves as subject matter expert in the School Wellness Program at the Calhoun County Public Health Department.

1. →Provide daily health services to students, including assessment and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries.
2. →Administer medications according to physician orders and/or medication consent form.
3. →Provide emergency and first aid care for students experiencing injuries, illnesses, allergic reactions, seizures, asthma attacks, or other medical emergencies.
4. →Monitor and manage chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, severe allergies, and other medical needs.
5. →Assist with individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) and/or Individualized education plan (IEP) for students with ongoing or complex health conditions.
6. →Maintain accurate and confidential health records.
7. →Communicate and collaborate with parents, healthcare providers, and staff regarding student health needs.
8. →Educate students and staff about health, hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention, medication safety, and management of chronic conditions.
9. →Promote a safe and healthy school environment by supporting infection control, communicable disease prevention, emergency preparedness, and overall student wellness.

• Must be a Registered Nurse licensed to practice in Michigan. BSN preferred.
• Oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Time management skills.
• Mental ability to frequently handle simultaneous projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with frequent distractions due to people and/or telephone calls.
• Frequently required to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time, perform repetitive movement, and/or work in confined areas.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.

• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Largely sedentary role with extensive computer work.
• Travel required between schools.
• May have contact with infectious disease exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
• On-call availability to respond to emergencies (e.g., program-related and public health emergencies).
• Extended workdays (beyond 8 hours/day) and weekends or holidays may be required.
