The Material Yardperson manages materials, equipment, and consumables within a rugged, outdoor laydown yard, serving a major gold mine construction project. This role requires an expert operator to safely navigate a telehandler (zoom boom) across unpaved, uneven terrain in variable weather conditions. You will be responsible for unloading heavy transport trucks, rigging critical lifts, and securing loads for transport across an active open pit mine site, while maintaining strict inventory control and safety provisions.
- Operate variable-reach telehandlers (Zoom Booms up to 12K+ capacity) safely, in tight, unpaved, and muddy outdoor laydown yards.
- Unload incoming freight, flatbeds, and step-deck transport trailers containing heavy earthworks parts, pipe, structural steel, and ground engagement tools.
- Stage, stack, and organize materials systematically to optimize yard space and ensure fast, safe retrieval for construction crews.
- Perform mandatory daily pre-shift equipment inspections and report mechanical issues immediately.
- Inspect, select, and utilize appropriate rigging hardware (slags, shackles, chains, spreader bars) based on weight and center of gravity.
- Act as the primary rigger/swamper, executing safe lifting plans for complex, awkward, or heavy loads.
- Secure materials onto site haul trucks, flatbeds, and off-road utility vehicles using straps, chains, and binders to ensure zero movement during transport over rough mine haul roads.
- Verify incoming shipments against packing slips, manifests, and purchase orders; report discrepancies or damaged goods immediately.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free laydown yard, ensuring clear emergency access and proper segregation of materials.
- Adhere strictly to the BC Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines, WorkSafeBC standards, and site-specific zero-harm policies.
- May be required to maintain a clean-shaven appearance (i.e. no facial hair) to ensure the safe and effective use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) associated with assigned duties.
