As an AI Engineer at PowerPlan, you'll be one of the first engineers on our Applied AI team: an in-house forward-deployed engineer who works like a product owner and owns AI solutions end to end, from the first conversation with a department to a tool its people use every week. You'll embed with teams across the company, from customer support and professional services to finance and sales, learn how the work really gets done, and build with real autonomy.

You'll report to the VP of Strategic Initiatives, the group that works closely with PowerPlan's executive leadership team on the company's top priorities, and you'll help shape how a brand-new team works from the ground up. Nine in ten U.S. investor-owned utilities trust PowerPlan's software to get their numbers right. Your job is to bring that same standard to how PowerPlan itself runs.

Responsibilities

Success will be measured by how many solutions you get into weekly use, the measurable change each one delivers, and whether the departments you work with can run and change their tools without you.

  • →In your first 30 days, embed with your first department, learn the work from the people who do it, and agree on a one-page problem statement, a measured baseline, and real examples before you build.
  • →Help write the playbook for a new team: standards for building with AI tools, keeping shared work current, and testing for quality and robustness, all shaped by what you learn on real builds.
  • →By the end of your first quarter, get your first solution into weekly pilot use, tested against real examples, with time saved measured against your baseline.
  • →Grow from one pilot to one or two solutions in weekly use by month six, and three across at least two departments by year end, including two larger cross-department builds with the team's AI data engineer.
  • →Redesign clumsy workflows with the people who run them instead of just speeding them up, with agentic coding tools as your default way of building.
  • →Leave every department with runbooks, training, and people who can run and change what you built without you.
  • →Publish your first reusable agent skills and workflow patterns by month six, grow them into a library the company reuses, and help set the standard for when AI output can be trusted and when a person should check it.

Requirements

  • You have two to four years of professional experience building or shipping software products (as an engineer, product manager, or similar), or a master's degree in a related field and at least one year of that experience.
  • You've shipped software or a product other people rely on, at work or on your own, and can walk us through what you built, why, and what changed once people used it.
  • You think in systems and reason from first principles. You ask why a step exists before you automate it, and you can show us a process you changed rather than just sped up.
  • You can turn a conversation with an expert into a clear problem statement and a way to measure success.
  • Agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or OpenCode are your default way of working, and you know how to plan the work, direct the tool, and check what it produces. We build with Claude Code and provide the tools.
  • You write working Python or JavaScript, or build working software with agentic coding tools, and use SQL and APIs.
  • You explain tradeoffs plainly and have taught someone, formally or not, to change a tool themselves.
  • You hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, industrial or systems engineering, or a closely related field.
  • You're based in Atlanta and can be in the office at least three days a week, and you're authorized to work in the United States (this role isn't eligible for visa sponsorship, now or in the future).
  • You have a minor or coursework in business, economics, or finance, or work experience in or alongside finance, accounting, professional services, or customer support.
  • You've used continuous improvement methods such as Lean, Six Sigma, or value stream mapping.
  • You've automated workflows inside business systems, or built agent skills, MCP connections, or other reusable pieces for AI tools.
  • You hold a master's degree in a related field, such as computer science, information systems, data science, or business analytics.
