The purpose of this role is to provide strategic clinical leadership to the Occupational Health (OH) Service across C-Care. The Occupational Health Doctor plays a pivotal role in promoting, protecting, and monitoring the health and wellbeing of all employees by delivering expert occupational health advice and interventions.
The role contributes to regulatory compliance, workforce resilience, and the creation of a safe and healthy working environment aligned with healthcare best practices and C-Care’s patient safety commitments.
Responsibilities
~2 min read- →Conduct pre-employment medicals and issue "Fitness for Work" certifications for all new employees
- →Provide clinical advice to management on workplace adjustments for employees with health conditions
- →Promote awareness of health and wellbeing initiatives during the onboarding process
- →Oversee and ensure the delivery of a comprehensive immunisation programme
- →Collaborate with the Occupational Health Nurse to monitor vaccine coverage and manage follow-up requirements
- →Conduct medical surveillance for employees exposed to specific occupational health risks (e.g. infectious diseases, hazardous substances)
- →Manage and advise on post-exposure treatment pathways, including PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) where indicated
- →Support infection control measures and refer to appropriate specialists when required
- →Interpret legislation and translate it into clear operational and clinical policies
- →Develop, review, and implement evidence-based occupational health protocols in line with CHKS, local legal standards
- →Lead or participate in internal audits and inspections to ensure full compliance with OH standards and regulatory requirements
- →Advise management on recurrent short- or long-term sickness absence cases, including capability assessments
- →Lead return-to-work planning and rehabilitation of employees following illness or injury
- →Provide independent medical opinions on workplace injuries, ill-health retirement, or medical incapacity cases
- →Support HR during disciplinary or grievance processes requiring medical input
- →Deliver education and awareness sessions on key occupational health issues (e.g. ergonomics, stress management, safe handling)
- →Champion mental health and employee wellbeing initiatives, in alignment with the corporate wellbeing strategy
- →Support the Health & Safety team in promoting a culture of prevention and care
- →Provide clinical leadership and mentorship to the Occupational Health Unit
- →Assess service capacity and resource needs to support strategic planning and service development
- →Collaborate with HR, H&S, Counselling, and external partners to deliver an integrated Health & Wellbeing service
- →Monitor and report on OH service KPIs, quality indicators, and staff satisfaction
- →Contribute to group-wide Health & Safety Committees and incident reviews, as applicable
- →Medical degree (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent)
- →Postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health or equivalent (e.g. Diploma or MSc in Occupational Health/Medicine)
- →Minimum 3–5 years of clinical experience post-registration
- →At least 2 years of experience in occupational health, preferably within a hospital or large organization would be an advantage
- →Experience conducting fitness-for-duty assessments, health surveillance, and managing return-to-work programs
- →Familiarity with workplace health risk assessments and compliance reporting
- →Knowledge of local occupational health laws and regulations (e.g. Workers’ Rights Act, OSH standards in Mauritius)
