As a Surgical Technologist, you will play an essential role in delivering safe, high-quality surgical care by assisting surgeons and Registered Nurses throughout a wide range of operative procedures. Working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, you will help maintain a sterile field, anticipate the needs of the surgical team and support positive patient outcomes from the start of each procedure through completion. 

In this hands-on role, you will prepare the operating room by organizing supplies and equipment, setting up sterile instrumentation, performing surgical counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments during procedures, preparing sterile dressings and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization. A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

• Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).   

• Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.   

• Assist RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery.  

• Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.  

• Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.   

• Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”   

• Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and give specimens to circulator for disposition. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

• Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)
