Join the award-winning Fleet Management Division of the City of Charlotte as a Master Emergency Vehicle Technician and become part of a team that keeps one of the region’s largest and most advanced fire apparatus fleets running strong. You’ll work alongside a dedicated group of EVT and ASE-certified Medium/Heavy Truck technicians, supporting essential services for the City of Charlotte.
In this expert-level role, you’ll be responsible for the daily evaluation, inspection, diagnosis, and repair of a wide range of fire apparatus and support equipment that is essential to Charlotte Fire’s mission.
You’ll take the lead on:
• Diagnosing and repairing complex electronically controlled diesel and gasoline engines
• Troubleshooting advanced electrical, air brake, and hydraulic systems
• Servicing complex systems specific to fire apparatus and support equipment with precision and care
• Mentoring and guiding junior technicians, sharing your expertise to foster growth and ensure high standards across the team

Responsibilities

    Ability to clearly communicate with a diverse group of technicians, vendors, staff, and customers

  • →

    Knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials used in maintaining and repairing fire apparatus, fire pumps, aerial devices, and class 8 diesel powered chassis

    Knowledge of Fleet Management Information Systems

  • →

    Works well without direct supervision

  • →

    Must be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and application for all phases of repairing vehicles/equipment.

    Knowledge of the occupational hazards & safety precautions of the trade

  • →

    Ability to resolve customer complaints related to vehicle repairs and maintenance

  • →

    Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. of equipment and/or tools.

    Follow oral & written instructions

  • →

    Ability to communicate effectively both orally & in writing

  • →

    Must have or obtain the following licensures within 6 months of hire:

      NC Inspection License

      AC Recover and Recycling License

    Must have or obtain within one year of hire:

      Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

      ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Status

    Must have or obtain within 18 months of hire:

      EVT Master status for fire apparatus

  • →

    Must have basic hand tools and tool storage upon hire.

    Ability to travel out of town for work/training on occasion

  • →

    Ability to support an on-call schedule 24 hours a day, including holidays and weekends, for 7 consecutive days

  • →

    Conflict management and resolution with staff, customers, and City vendors

  • →

    Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and customers.

Requirements

  • Degree or certification from an accredited technical school / college / university /

  • Manufacturer training certification related to fire apparatus

  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Master Status

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician Master Status

  • At least three years of experience related to heavy truck and diesel engine repair

  • At least two years of experience related to fire apparatus maintenance and repair

  •  High School diploma/GED with five (5) years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
