This position is a part-time, non-uniformed assignment that fall in line with the school year and reports to the Administrative Sergeant / Shift Supervisor. The primary responsibility is to assist elementary age children cross roads and streets that lead to and from school, at authorized locations.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  1. The Crossing Guard shall walk to the middle of the street and hold up the hand held "STOP" sign until all children are safely across the street. S/he must work with a traffic signal or crosswalk, if one is available at the assigned location. The Crossing Guard shall not direct traffic in the usual police regulatory sense.
  2. The Crossing Guard shall be on post one half hour (30 minutes) prior to the tardy bell of the school and remain on duty until five minutes after the classes start. This shall be 3 times daily on each school day for the arrival, lunch and departure of students.
  3. The Crossing Guard shall have no police powers to stop, detain, arrest, cite or question subjects that they encounter during their duty hours. If the Crossing Guard witnesses a violation then they are to contact the Chesterfield Township Police Department and provide the information to the Dispatcher.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Transportation to and from the assigned crossing location.
  3. Must not have any criminal convictions.

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

The Chesterfield Township Police Department will provide a regulated traffic vest that meets all requirements imposed by the State, County and School District. This vest must be worn as the outer-most garment while at the assigned location. Also, a hand held "STOP" sign that also meets these requirements will be issued. Both of these items are to be returned to the Chesterfield Township Police Department upon separation of duties.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a Crossing Guard. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

 

While performing the duties of this position, the Crossing Guard is frequently required to:

  • Talk and pay attention to their surroundings
  • Walk and stand for lengthy periods of time
  • Handle or hold the 'STOP' sign and extend it out, away from the body, so it is visible from all angles
  • Occasionally lift, or move, up to ten (10) pounds
  • Have good vision and the ability to adjust focus as needed

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

The Crossing Guard must be able to stand and walk in all inclement weather (rain, snow, ice, heat). The noise level in the work environment varies but is comparable to the typical daily activity of the outside at midday, but will include periods of predominate traffic commotion.

 

SELECTION GUIDELINES:

 

Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and background check; job related tests may be required, as well as physical and psychological examinations.
