Responsibilities

Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor this position will be responsible for:
  • →Providing legal services to the Corporation in all areas of the law as necessary, with an emphasis on insurance and risk;
  • →Administering the Corporation’s insurance portfolio and ensuring that the Corporation is adequately insured and/or protected;
  • →Carrying out operational aspects of the Corporation’s risk management function to reduce, control, transfer and finance risk; 
  • →Consulting and negotiating with adjusters, brokers, insurers and internal and external lawyers on insurance and risk matters;
  • →Drafting reports to CAO and Council and attending Council, board or committee meetings, as required;
  • →Preparing legal opinions for the guidance of City Council and Administration;
  • →Negotiating and drafting corporate/commercial agreements; 
  • →Providing additional legal services to the Corporation as may be required, which may include representation before the courts, administrative boards and tribunals;
  • →Performing Occupational Health and Safety duties as outlined in the Corporate Health and Safety Program; and
  • →Performing other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Must have a JD, LLB or equivalent and a minimum of six (6) years of broad legal experience after being called to the Bar, with emphasis on: a) personal injury and insurance law; and/or b) corporate and commercial law;
  • Must be in and maintain good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;
  • Must have basic knowledge of contract law and insurance law;
  • A risk management or insurance designation would be an asset;
  • A basic knowledge of municipal law and the Municipal Act, 2001 would be an asset;
  • Must have the ability to travel to off site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required.  If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful driver’s license is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment;
  • Must be fully computer literate and well versed in the MS Office suite, particularly Outlook and Word (Excel and Access skills will be considered assets);
  • Must be able to effectively use Westlaw@Carswell and Internet resources for legal research;
  • Must have strong interpersonal, negotiation, and verbal and written communication skills;
  • Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with the work.
  • The physical demands analysis associated with this job indicates a sedentary level of work.
