Chewonki Foundation is seeking a compassionate, collaborative, and culturally responsive Mental Health Coordinator to provide support, guidance, and training across our year-round programs. The Interim Mental Health Coordinator is a part-time position providing mental health support, consultation, training, and coordination across Chewonki programs throughout the year. The IMHC works closely with participants, families, program leaders, Health & Wellness staff, educators, and external mental health providers to support emotional well-being and help participants successfully navigate their Chewonki experience.
Location: Wiscasset, Maine (On Campus/Hybrid Position)
Schedule/Approximate Dates:
Year round, 30 hours per week, with on-call hours
Start Date: December 2026, or January 2027
Reports to: Director of Health and Wellness Center

Responsibilities

Develop consistent mental health policies and procedures for all programs in collaboration with the Health and Wellness Center team, the Risk Management Team and other Program Directors.

Evaluate and follow up on all enrollment eligibility concerns and coordinate Circle of Care meetings when necessary.
- →
Prepare and share out Participant Support Plans for both pre-existing mental health conditions and those that arise while in a Chewonki program.

Be an active community presence when on campus to normalize routine presence and check-ins on well-being (with leaders, advisors, counselors, participants).

Participate in critical incident management including advising on mental health implications involved in potential disciplinary situations with community impact.

Provide consultation to program leaders when mental health concerns arise and direct therapeutic support for participants/staff when appropriate.

Use electronic record keeping systems to document all care and communication.

Train all staff on the Chewonki Student Assistance Program to ensure no one is alone with a mental health concern. Coordinate necessary referrals to outside providers for crisis or safety assessments, and plans for re-entry after a participant's mental health leave.

Coordinate telehealth services for participants with outside clinical providers as needed.

Annual review with Program Directors to update any website content, handbook, and other written program materials.

Serve as a member of the Chewonki Risk Management Team and develop interventions for high risk behaviors and participation on community debriefs for critical incidents.

Serve as a member of the Maine Coast Semester Health Team and Camp Health Team, and attend program meetings as requested.

Engage in ongoing professional development related to current mental health best practices.

Willingness to obtain Wilderness First Responder certification and provide coverage as needed in the Health & Wellness Center.

Obtain medication administration training and pass medications on an as needed basis.

Fulfill all other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or School Psychologist (PhD)
Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)
Potential internship opportunity!
Experience working in an outdoor educational setting or demonstrated equivalent experience working with children, adolescents, and families.
Positive, compassionate, collaborative, and approachable personality.
Passionate about working with children and adolescents and able to connect easily with this population.

Committed to personal and professional growth and working as part of a team.
Must complete fingerprinting requirements and pass a criminal background check with the Maine Department of Education.
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs.
Must be able to work in an active, outdoor environment in all weather conditions.
