Responsibilities

~1 min read
  • Keep production databases stable and resilient, with reliable failover, replication, and disaster-recovery plans.
  • Own backup and recovery strategy and automate regular testing of restores and failover.
  • Refresh non-production environments from production data safely and repeatably.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and tune database performance, from queries and indexes to server and instance configuration.
  • Partner with engineers on schema design, query optimization, and efficient data processing.
  • Plan for capacity and growth before they become problems.
  • Build and maintain monitoring, dashboards and alerting that surface issues early.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation, responding to and resolving database incidents, then following up with fixes that prevent repeats.
  • Install, configure, patch, and upgrade self-hosted database servers on EC2, using scripted, repeatable processes.
  • Manage access using least-privilege principles, and audit roles and permissions regularly.
  • Implement encryption, secure connections, and auditing to protect sensitive financial and personal data.
  • Review and deploy database changes and maintain and enforce best practices for database deployments.
  • Improve our GitLab CI/CD pipelines for database changes, making releases safer, faster, more automated, and SOC 2 compliant.
  • Write and review production data fixes with care.
  • Automate routine tasks with Python and scripting and keep runbooks and documentation current.
  • Bring our AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) resources, including replication instances, endpoints, and tasks, under infrastructure-as-code with Terraform.
  • Collaborate with DevOps on the EC2 instances, storage, and networking for our databases.
  • Build repeatable, automated processes for database provisioning, patching, and failover.
  • Provision new databases as new services come online.
  • Support data engineering pipelines, including AWS DMS replication and orchestration, that move operational data into Snowflake.
  • Help developers with database access, troubleshooting, and best practices.
  • Use modern AI tools and agents to accelerate performance analysis, troubleshooting, scripting, and documentation.
  • Identify opportunities where AI can improve database operations and reliability.
  • Share effective AI workflows and techniques with the team.

Requirements

~1 min read
  • 3+ years of administering SQL Server or PostgreSQL in production, with strong hands-on skills in the other.
  • High availability, disaster recovery, and backup/restore, including failover replicas, streaming replication, and point-in-time recovery.
  • Running self-hosted databases on AWS EC2 and Linux, in partnership with DevOps.
  • Performance tuning and query optimization, plus strong T-SQL and SQL, including stored procedures and functions.
  • Instance configuration, security, roles, and routine maintenance across both engines.
  • Automation with Python and working knowledge of PowerShell and Bash, using Git-based workflows with code review and staged deployments.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and a calm approach to production incidents.
  • Strong written communication for runbooks, documentation, and tickets.
  • Using AI-assisted tools for database analysis and operations.
  • Designing database architecture that scales with the business, such as partitioning, read scaling, and capacity planning.
  • Windows Server administration in support of SQL Server and its services.
  • Monitoring and observability with tools like Zabbix and Grafana.
  • Building or improving CI/CD pipelines for database changes.
  • Terraform, especially bringing existing resources under infrastructure-as-code.
  • AWS DMS or other change-data-capture and replication tools.
  • Data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake), ETL/ELT pipelines, or workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Prefect, Airflow).
  • Supporting SOC 2 or similar compliance audits.
  • Fintech, lending, payments, banking, or another highly regulated environment.
  • Our databases are stable, fast, and recover predictably when something goes wrong.
  • Performance problems are caught early and fixed at the root.
  • Database changes ship safely and routinely through automated pipelines.
  • Database infrastructure is defined in code, and changes are repeatable and reviewable.
  • Access to sensitive data is controlled and auditable.
  • Engineers trust the data platform and know where to go for help.
  • Database knowledge is documented and shared rather than concentrated with a few individuals.

You are an owner first.

You enjoy digging into execution plans and wait stats, but you also understand that the goal is reliable systems for the business.

You think about what happens when a server fails, a restore is needed, or a deployment goes wrong, not just when everything works.

You’d rather automate a task than do it twice.

Most importantly, you want the systems you run to keep performing reliably and scale as Clicklease grows.
