About the Role

~1 min read

Clutch is hiring its first Director of Health, Safety & Environment to build and lead a best-in-class HSE function for a high-growth, multi-site production and logistics business. You will own the enterprise HSE mandate: setting the strategy, building the team and systems, shaping the culture, and protecting every worker across our national footprint.

Reporting to the CEO, you will be the senior HSE authority for the business and a trusted advisor to the executive team. You will lead the implementation of a Safety Management System, build and lead an HSE team as Clutch’s footprint grows, and translate audit findings into sustainable programs. You will create a safety culture where workers feel heard, hazards get reported, and leaders take action.

Responsibilities

~1 min read
  • Set the national HSE strategy and win executive buy-in and investment.
  • Own the Safety Management System and Health & Safety Policy, with a clear path to certification.
  • Chair the national governance cadence, from monthly operational reviews to the annual management system review.
  • Own the regulatory register across every province (OHSA, CNESST, OHS Act, WSBC) and enterprise compliance for WHMIS and TDG.
  • Be the senior point of contact for inspectors and auditors, and run the annual internal audit program.
  • Own HSE for yard traffic, vehicle movements, trailer loading and fueling, including TDG compliance.
  • Partner with People Operations and Logistics on driver and fleet safety.
  • Keep pedestrians and vehicles apart with enforced traffic management plans and safe-work standards for loading and moving vehicles.
  • Roll out the RACE hazard process at every site and own the enterprise HSE risk register.
  • Build a worker-led hazard reporting system that closes the loop, and run the contractor and visitor safety program.
  • Lead root-cause investigations of serious incidents and track every corrective action to verified closure.
  • Manage WSIB/WCB claims, return-to-work and modified duty to bring down costs and experience ratings.
  • Build the national HSE training matrix, a New Worker Safety Orientation and a Safety Leadership program.
  • Back every site’s JHSC, give workers a real voice, and coach leaders to be visible on safety.
  • Define the KPIs, run the monthly national dashboard, present quarterly to the executive team, and own the HSE budget.
  • Build and lead the HSE team as we scale.
  • 7+ years of progressive HSE experience, including at least 3 years in a senior leadership role (Senior Manager, Director or equivalent) with national or multi-site accountability.
  • Proven experience building and leading an HSE team, including managers or leaders who report to you.
  • Background in production, automotive, logistics or similar high-hazard industrial environments strongly preferred.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with Canadian OHS legislation across multiple provinces (Ontario OHSA expertise is essential).
  • Demonstrated experience building or significantly maturing an HSE management system, not just maintaining one.
  • Executive presence and the ability to influence at the C-suite level, present to the Board and hold senior operational leaders accountable.
  • Experience owning an HSE budget and building business cases for capital safety investment.
  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation preferred; CHSC or equivalent considered.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 45001, WHMIS 2015, TDG and WSIB/WCB claims management.
  • Comfortable working fully on-site at our Mississauga facility, with travel to other sites as needed.
  • Be part of a disruptive, tech-driven company transforming the automotive industry, one of the largest and fastest-growing B2C startups in Canada.
  • Take full ownership of building a best-in-class safety program from the ground up, with a direct line to the executive team.
  • Shape safety across our production sites and new facility launches as we scale nationally.
  • Own safety for logistics and field operations, from yard traffic and fueling to fleet and driver safety.
  • Equity incentives alongside a competitive salary.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits.
  • Opportunities for growth and development in a rapidly scaling company.
