About Your Role

The Building Power Systems Subject Matter Expert (SME) provides technical leadership for the planning, design review, integration, and commissioning of electrical power systems supporting airport facilities and infrastructure. This includes medium- and low-voltage distribution systems, emergency power systems, generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), switchgear, transformers, and critical power monitoring systems.

The SME ensures electrical power systems are designed for high reliability, redundancy, and safety to support mission-critical airport operations such as terminals, airfield systems, security infrastructure, and life safety systems. They coordinate closely with electrical engineers, utility providers, contractors, and airport stakeholders to ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, aviation standards, and operational requirements while supporting system testing, commissioning, and long-term resilience.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil, mechanical or electrical engineering with 10 years of experience

or

  • 20 years of experience working with Building Power Systems

What You’ll Need to Get the Job Done

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 15+ years of experience in large-scale electrical power systems design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Extensive experience with medium-voltage (MV) distribution systems, including substations, switchgear, and feeders.
  • Strong background in emergency power systems, including generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and backup power strategies.
  • Experience with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems supporting critical loads and mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated expertise in electrical redundancy, resiliency planning, and system reliability design for large facilities.
  • Proficiency in performing and reviewing arc flash studies, coordination studies, and short-circuit analyses.
  • Experience with electrical load calculations, demand analysis, and system capacity coordination.
  • Strong understanding of electrical protection schemes, grounding, and power quality considerations.
  • Experience reviewing and developing electrical design packages, specifications, and construction submittals.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC), IEEE standards, and applicable airport or critical infrastructure electrical requirements.
  • Experience supporting commissioning activities, functional testing, and system energization procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate across mechanical, controls, and architectural disciplines for integrated building systems.
  • Airport, transit, healthcare, or other large mission-critical facility experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, technical leadership, and stakeholder coordination skills.
