Our client in the Energy industry is seeking a highly experienced Finance Manager to serve as the Head of the entire Finance function of the Group’s Energy Vertical, based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The successful candidate will carry end-to-end ownership of the vertical’s financial strategy, controllership, treasury, taxation, compliance, financial planning and analysis, and management reporting, and will act as the principal finance advisor to the Group leadership and the Board on all matters affecting the Energy business.
The role demands a seasoned finance leader who has operated at DGM / GM level in a business vertical of at least USD 300 million in revenue, with deep exposure to the Energy sector as well as Retail, Trading and Export-Import operations. The incumbent is expected to combine strong technical and controllership capability with commercial acumen, driving profitability, liquidity, governance and sustainable growth of the vertical.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- Lead and manage the entire Finance function of the Energy Vertical as a core member of the senior leadership team.
- Formulate and execute the vertical’s financial strategy in alignment with the Group’s overall vision, growth plans and capital allocation priorities.
- Partner with the CEO / Managing Director and business heads on pricing, margin management, capital expenditure, expansion projects, and new business / investment evaluation (including financial modelling, feasibility studies and due diligence).
- Provide decision support on long-term contracts, fuel/commodity procurement, supply agreements and strategic sourcing from a financial risk-return perspective.
- Own the integrity of the books of account and ensure accurate, complete and timely closing of monthly, quarterly and annual accounts for the vertical and its entities.
- Ensure financial statements are prepared in accordance with IFRS and applicable local GAAP, statutes and Group accounting policies.
- Oversee consolidation of the Energy Vertical’s results for Group reporting, including inter-company reconciliations and eliminations.
- Drive standardisation, automation and continuous improvement of accounting processes, ERP utilisation and the finance operating model.
- Lead the annual budgeting, rolling forecasts and long-range planning exercises for the vertical.
- Institutionalise robust MIS and performance dashboards - covering revenue, margins, working capital, cash flows, project performance and KPIs - for the Group leadership and Board.
- Conduct detailed variance analysis (budget vs. actuals), identify profitability drivers and cost-reduction opportunities, and drive corrective action with business teams.
- Monitor unit economics across energy trading, distribution, retail and export-import operations.
- Manage treasury operations including cash flow planning, liquidity management, fund raising (working capital and term facilities), and deployment of surplus funds.
- Negotiate and manage banking lines, trade finance instruments (LCs, SBLCs, bank guarantees, buyer’s/supplier’s credit), structured commodity finance and foreign exchange exposure, including hedging strategies.
- Optimise working capital - inventory, receivables and payables cycles - particularly in trading and import/export operations with long logistics chains.
- Maintain strong relationships with local and international banks, DFIs, lenders, insurers and credit rating agencies.
- Ensure full compliance with Tanzanian tax laws (corporate income tax, VAT, withholding taxes, customs and excise duties) and all applicable regulatory requirements of the energy sector, including filings with TRA and sector regulators.
- Oversee transfer pricing documentation and compliance for cross-border and inter-company transactions across the Group’s jurisdictions.
- Manage tax planning and structuring of transactions in a compliant and efficient manner; handle tax assessments, audits and litigation with authorities.
- Ensure compliance with exchange control regulations, import/export documentation, and company law / secretarial requirements in coordination with legal and company secretarial functions.
- Design, implement and monitor a robust internal control framework, delegation of authority matrix, and finance policies and SOPs across the vertical.
- Lead statutory, internal and tax audits; ensure timely closure of audit observations and implementation of recommendations.
- Identify, assess and mitigate financial, commodity, currency, counterparty, credit and operational risks; maintain adequate insurance coverage for assets and operations.
- Uphold the highest standards of corporate governance, ethics and financial discipline; present to the Audit Committee and Board as required.
- Provide financial oversight of energy trading operations - deal structuring, counterparty credit evaluation, margin monitoring, mark-to-market positions and settlement.
- Oversee costing, landed cost computation, duty structures, logistics costs and documentation for import/export transactions.
- Evaluate and manage commodity price risk and devise appropriate hedging / pass-through mechanisms in contracts.
- Build, lead, mentor and develop a high-performing, multi-cultural finance team across locations; institute succession planning and capability development.
- Act as the key finance interface with Group corporate office, promoters/shareholders, Board members, auditors, bankers, regulators, tax authorities and other external stakeholders.
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, timeliness and business partnership within the finance organisation.
Requirements
~1 min read- Qualified Chartered Accountant (CA) - mandatory.
- Minimum 10-15 years of post-qualification experience, with significant exposure to the Energy business, along with Retail, Trading and Export-Import operations.
- Must have served as DGM - Finance or GM - Finance (or equivalent) heading / co-heading the finance function of a business vertical of at least USD 250 million in annual turnover.
- Demonstrated experience of independently managing the complete finance function - accounting, treasury, taxation, FP&A, MIS, audit, bank loan and compliance.
- Strong working knowledge of IFRS, taxation of cross-border transactions, trade finance instruments and ERP environments (SAP / Oracle / Microsoft Dynamics or similar).
- Expatriate candidates with relevant experience are encouraged to apply, particularly professionals with experience in India
- Experience in Either of Middle East, India will be must.
- Prior work experience in East Africa / Africa or other emerging markets; familiarity with Tanzanian tax and regulatory environment will be a distinct advantage.
- Experience of dealing with DFIs, Banks, structured commodity finance and energy sector regulators.
