At Compass, we're on a mission to transform the school day for everyone - from staff and students to families and administrators.

We build smart, seamless technology that empowers schools to focus on what really matters: learning, growing and thriving. That mission has fuelled our growth into a global scale-up, now supporting 5,000+ schools across three countries, backed by a team of 300+ people. Our all-in-one school management platform is redefining how education communities connect, communicate and operate.

We're now looking for a Junior / Mid-Level Software Engineer to help us build new web applications and grow the Compass core platform.

About the Role

~1 min read

This role isn't tied to one area of the platform. You'll work across a wide range of new, small web applications that we want to scale up and flesh out, as well as building on top of the large Compass core project. Our main stack is C#/.NET and React, with SQL and MongoDB databases, and you'll work with Claude Code as part of how we build.

We're looking for engineers with a few years' of professional experience under your belt, with senior engineers alongside you for bigger design and architecture calls.

Responsibilities

~1 min read
  • Take on well-scoped pieces of work and carry them from ticket to production, working closely with product managers, owners and fellow engineers.
  • Design, develop and maintain secure, well-structured, high-performance software used by thousands of students, parents and teachers around the world.
  • Scale up and flesh out new web applications, and build new features on top of the Compass core platform.
  • Write clean, well-tested code, including unit tests for your own changes and critical paths.
  • Give and receive code review as a core way to grow your craft.
  • Analyse problems to uncover hidden complexity, and design solutions that balance technical feasibility with business value.
  • Document meaningful technical decisions.
  • Use Claude Code day to day to speed up delivery without compromising quality.
  • Know where AI helps, where it doesn't, and what to do about it.
  • Work with product managers and owners to understand customer needs and make sure solutions deliver the right outcome.
  • Take part in sprint planning, technical design sessions and retrospectives with well-prepared ideas.
  • Work with the support team to triage and resolve production issues.
  • Communicate ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Keep learning modern frameworks, tools and practices, and apply them to improve the product and how we build it.

Requirements

  • 2+ years professional experience in software development.
  • Familiarity with, or the aptitude to quickly pick up, our core stack: C#/.NET and React.
  • Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases (we use SQL and MongoDB).
  • Solid computer science fundamentals and a good grasp of clean code and software design principles.
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor or similar).
  • A real interest in the whole software lifecycle: testing, shipping and supporting code in production.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • A proactive mindset: you take ownership, share ideas and see them through.
  • Curiosity about the product and the business, not just the code.
  • A disciplined approach to AI: writing the specs, context and guardrails that make agents useful on a real codebase.
  • An eye for quality that catches problems before they ship, such as unnecessary abstractions, duplicated logic and subtle bugs.
  • The instinct to trace a problem to its root before reaching for a solution.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools and CI/CD pipelines.
