Associate/Full Professor of Chemistry with Tenure (The John and Elizabeth Leonard Endowed Chair of Environmental Chemistry) (Full Professor rank will be considered for exceptional and experienced candidates)

• Ph.D degree in Environmental Chemistry or related field
• Demonstrated record of research, teaching, and service commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank Associate or Full Professor
• Established, externally-funded, research program in the field
• Demonstrated effective, student-centered, and inclusive teaching in chemistry or related topics at the undergraduate or graduate levels, with a commitment to learning and to incorporating pedagogical best practices

• Demonstrated record of sustaining an independent, externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students and leading to peer-reviewed publications and presentations
• Demonstrated commitment to effectively engaging and mentoring a diverse student population, including low-socioeconomic and first-generation students, in scientific research and education
• Experience using effective, inclusive, culturally relevant, and evidence-based approaches to teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
• Demonstrated effective, student-centered, and inclusive teaching in chemistry or related topics at the undergraduate and graduate levels with a commitment to learning and to incorporating pedagogical best practices
• Experience successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
• Experience mentoring or supporting students using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom

• Teach undergraduate and graduate (Master of Science degree) courses in Environmental Chemistry and related areas, commensurate with expertise and experience (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof).
• Develop and sustain an independent and externally-funded research program
• Contribute to Department efforts to develop a highly skilled scientific workforce by effectively educating, training and mentoring students from a broad range of backgrounds
• Mentor undergraduate and master’s-level graduate students in scholarly activities/research leading to peer-reviewed publications and presentations
• Actively represent the Endowed Chair and CSULB on community committees
• Participate in service to the department, college, university, profession, and community

The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM) is a research-active community of teacher-scholars and a national leader in integrating undergraduate research with science and mathematics education. Faculty conduct research across six departments—Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Earth Science, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Astronomy, and Science Education—as well as the Environmental Science and Policy program, with undergraduate and master’s students participating directly in faculty-led research. Research is supported by modern laboratory facilities, shared instrumentation, and substantial investments in research infrastructure, including recent externally and institutionally supported investments in state-of-the-art scientific equipment. CNSM students also benefit from a broad portfolio of funded research and training opportunities, including programs supported by the NIH and NSF. The College integrates active scholarship with high-quality, inquiry-based instruction and faculty mentorship. CNSM is committed to making these educational and research opportunities accessible to our broad student population and to preparing the next generation of scientists and mathematicians for graduate education, professional careers, and leadership in STEM.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is housed in modern buildings with well-equipped laboratories and high-end shared instrumentation. We are a vibrant community of scientists and educators dedicated to providing a high-quality curriculum focused on student success, with hands-on research opportunities for our students. Our 17 tenured/ tenure-track faculty carry out cutting-edge research in Biochemistry, Organic, Inorganic, Materials Science, Analytical, Computational, and Physical Chemistry, providing stimulating research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) students resulting in student co-authored peer-reviewed publications. Department faculty are highly successful in receiving external support from federal/state agencies as well as industry. Members of our faculty also provide substantial leadership in federally funded diversity-related research training programs in STEM and biomedical fields. In addition to B.S. and B.A. degrees in both Biochemistry and Chemistry, we have thriving thesis-based graduate programs (M.S. Biochemistry and M.S. Chemistry) which currently serve ~80 graduate students. Our graduates pursue a diverse array of careers including health professions, academia, teaching, industry, and government agencies.
