Graduate Assistants (GAs) in the Department of Psychology provide part-time professional and technical assistance to faculty in activities related to their graduate study. GA assignments are non-instructional and are designed to provide graduate students with practical experience relevant to their academic and professional development.
Responsibilities vary according to the needs of the faculty member, research project, or grant supporting the appointment. Graduate Assistants may assist with research activities, data collection and organization, literature searches, preparation of research materials, use of research equipment, laboratory activities, student training, preparation of reports and other project materials, and other professional or technical work requiring knowledge and skills appropriate to graduate-level study.
Some assignments may involve work in specialized research settings, including laboratories or animal research facilities, and may require assignment-specific training before work begins.
- Assist faculty with authorized research and other special projects.
- Collect, organize, enter, manage, or summarize research data.
- Conduct literature searches and compile bibliographies or other source materials.
- Assist with preparation of research materials, protocols, reports, presentations, or other project-related materials.
- Assist with preparation, organization, and maintenance of materials used in research projects.
- Organize, train, and supervise laboratory research teams .
- Coordinate and conduct research projects.
- Perform project-specific professional or technical tasks appropriate to the student's academic preparation.
- Participate in required training associated with the particular research environment or assignment.
- Meet regularly with the faculty supervisor and complete assigned work within established timelines.
- Provide routine animal care and technical support in accordance with approved animal-use protocols and institutional standards.
- Comply with applicable university, college, department, laboratory, and research policies and procedures.
For assignments involving specialized facilities or research activities, additional duties and training requirements may apply.
Requirements
~4 min readKnowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of the subject matter of the discipline in which assigned. Ability to relate well to others within the academic environment; ability to supervise, assist, and train students; and ability to assist faculty in the conduct of special projects/research within the discipline.
Experience: For the initial appointment, evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work. For subsequent appointment, evidence of satisfactory progress toward completion of the degree.
Education: Equivalent to completion of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree and registration in a CSU graduate degree program. Students enrolled in credential programs are not eligible for this position.
Applicants must:
- Have completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree or equivalent preparation.
- Be enrolled in a CSU graduate degree program. Students enrolled in credential programs are not eligible for Graduate Assistant appointments.
- Demonstrate satisfactory achievement in previous academic work for an initial appointment and satisfactory progress toward completion of the graduate degree for subsequent appointments.
- Possess knowledge of the subject matter relevant to the assignment.
- Possess the academic preparation and ability necessary to assist faculty with the research, professional, or technical activities associated with the assignment.
- Be able to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other students and to perform assigned work responsibly.
- Coursework or other academic preparation directly relevant to the project or assignment.
- Prior research experience related to the work to be performed.
- Experience with research methods, data collection, data management, or data analysis relevant to the assignment.
- Experience conducting literature searches or preparing research materials.
- Experience with laboratory procedures, research equipment, or specialized research environments relevant to the assignment.
- Experience working in an animal research facility or with research animals, when applicable to the assignment.
- Demonstrated reliability, attention to detail, and ability to complete work within established timelines.
- Demonstrated potential to effectively train and mentor other students.

Education Code 89521 Requirements: Applicants will be required to disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last 7 years only after a determination is made that they meet the minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended. The Department of Psychology is one of the largest academic departments at CSUSB, serving more than 1,700 undergraduate majors and over 100 graduate students. The department offers a B.A. in Psychology with concentrations in General Psychology, Biological Psychology, and Industrial-Organizational Psychology. Graduate offerings include M.A. programs in Clinical/Counseling Psychology, Psychological Science, and Industrial-Organizational Psychology.
Faculty conduct research across a broad range of areas in psychology, providing graduate students with opportunities to develop research and professional skills through faculty-supervised projects. Graduate Assistant assignments vary depending on faculty research activities, grant-supported projects, available funding, and project needs.
