San Diego State University is seeking a dependable and skilled Facilities Worker I to support the maintenance, repair, and operation of campus buildings and infrastructure. This role performs preventive maintenance, semi-skilled repairs, and general facilities support to help ensure safe and reliable campus operations.

Responsibilities

  • Preventive Maintenance & Building Systems Support
    • Perform routine preventive maintenance, inspections, minor adjustments, and equipment checks on campus building systems.
    • Identify and report leaks, wear, damage, access issues, safety concerns, and other maintenance needs.
    • Maintain documentation of preventive maintenance activities and equipment conditions.
  • Facilities Maintenance, Repair & Operational Support
    • Perform semi-skilled maintenance and minor repairs involving plumbing, mechanical, electrical, architectural, and other facility systems.
    • Troubleshoot basic facility issues and refer complex trade-related work to journey-level staff or supervisors.
    • Document completed work, materials, labor, and facility conditions in the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Journey-Level & Project Support 
    • Assist journey-level trades staff with maintenance, repair, renovation, event, and project work.
    • Provide support with materials, equipment access, setup, cleanup, staging, and other project needs.
  • Emergency, Shop & General Campus Support 
    • Respond to work orders, trouble calls, and urgent maintenance needs within the scope of the position.
    • Maintain tools, equipment, work areas, and assigned facilities in a safe and organized condition.
    • Support other Facilities Services teams, campus events, projects, and operational needs as assigned.

  • Position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure and human resources at San Diego State University.

SDSU Facilities Services is a customer-service based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs approximately 250 employees and supports approximately eight million square feet of buildings {including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land.

These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of experience and training equivalent to six months of experience as a trades assistant or laborer, or six months of hands-on experience in general facilities and systems maintenance and repair work.

Requirements

  • Basic familiarity with building mechanical equipment and preventive maintenance tasks, including air handling units, fan coil units, exhaust fans, pumps, filters, belts, strainers, valves, condensate drains, and mechanical room housekeeping.
  • Ability to support mechanical maintenance activities without independently performing journey-level HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, boiler, controls, or mechanical system work.
  • Experience assisting journey-level mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or facilities trades staff
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management system to receive, document, and close work orders
  • Ability and willingness to perform asbestos, lead, mold, or other regulated-materials work if properly trained and assigned
  • Two years of verifiable employment experience performing semi-skilled facilities maintenance, mechanical maintenance support, HVAC support, plumbing support, construction labor, or closely related work; technical school trades certification may substitute for one year of work experience preferred
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance tasks in a large commercial, institutional, campus, healthcare, government, or multi-building environment preferred
