Registered Nurse

Student Health Services at San Diego State University is seeking a Registered Nurse to provide comprehensive nursing care within SDSU Student Health Services. This position provides nursing assessment, triage, treatment, patient education, care coordination, and follow-up within established protocols and the Registered Nurse scope of practice. The Registered Nurse works collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and other health care team members at SDSU to support student health and well-being.

• →Provide in-person and telephone triage using established protocols and assess patients’ symptoms, medical histories, medications, allergies, vital signs, and health needs.
• →Staff the Nurse Clinic and provide assessment, treatment, follow-up, and patient education for common health concerns, including but not limited to: urinary tract infections, respiratory symptoms, pregnancy testing, emergency contraception, and sexually transmitted infection screening.
• →Develop and evaluate individualized nursing care plans and educate patients on treatment plans, self-care, health promotion, wellness, preventive care, and available campus or community resources.
• →Respond to emergent or potentially critical situations with accuracy, efficiency, and professionalism.
• →Perform clinical procedures and treatments under the direction of physicians and nurse practitioners, including medication administration, immunizations, specimen collection, testing, wound care, splinting, casting, and other nursing services.
• →Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation in the electronic health record while protecting patient privacy and complying with HIPAA, FERPA, and applicable laws and policies.
• →Support Student Health Services operations through staff training, competency activities, committee participation, policy and procedure development, outreach events, supply management, and process improvement.

• Full-time, benefits-eligible, permanent/probationary position.
• Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
• Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
• The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board-certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners, and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics, osteopathic manipulative treatment, and psychiatry.

• High School Diploma
• Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. 
• One year of professional nursing experience which has provided evidence of the ability to work independently in specialized nursing activities and to support the overall nursing program within the Student Health Center. 
• Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

• Ability to perform triage and respond to urgent or emergency situations with sound judgment, accuracy, and compassion.
• Knowledge of nursing principles, clinical procedures, anatomy, physiology, medications, and medical equipment.
• Ability to assess health needs, provide appropriate care, and develop and evaluate care plans.
• Demonstrated clinical skills in areas such as intravenous therapy, therapeutic injections, nebulizer treatments, wound care, suture removal, electrocardiograms, and physical assessments.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with other health care professionals in a team setting and communicate respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and applicable laws and regulations.
• Experience using electronic health records, practice management systems, and other health care technology.
