Position Summary
The Senior Mechanic is responsible for performing advanced diagnostics, repairs, preventative maintenance, and inspections on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and support equipment while supporting daily shop operations and mentoring junior mechanics. This role works closely with the Shop Manager and Operations team to maintain equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and support field operations. This role is designed to support future progression into a Shop Foreman position.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
- Perform diagnostics, repairs, servicing, inspections, and preventative maintenance on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and small engine equipment.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine issues efficiently and accurately.
- Complete repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications, company standards, and operational timelines.
- Ensure maintenance records and inspections are completed accurately and equipment is safe before returning to service.
- Respond to field breakdowns and emergency repair situations as required.
Technical Support & Mentorship
- Provide technical guidance and support to mechanics, apprentices, and shop personnel.
- Assist with training and mentoring junior team members to support skill development and safe work practices.
- Support repair prioritization and workflow coordination in collaboration with the Shop Manager.
- Promote a positive, team-oriented, and safety-focused work environment.
Shop Operations
- Support daily shop workflow to meet operational and project requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop and yard environment.
- Assist with monitoring inventory, ordering parts, and coordinating external repair services as required.
- Ensure tools, shop equipment, and service vehicles remain in safe working condition.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow and support company safety policies, safe work procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in safety meetings, hazard assessments, and incident investigations as required.
- Ensure proper use of PPE, tools, and equipment at all times.
Communication & Administration
- Maintain regular communication with the Shop Manager and operations teams regarding equipment status, repair timelines, and priority maintenance items.
- Complete work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, and related documentation accurately and on time.
- Assist with preventative maintenance scheduling and shop reporting as required.
Requirements
- Red Seal Truck and Transport Technician certification (preferred) or Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician certification.
- Strong working knowledge of heavy equipment, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and diagnostics.
- Extensive experience performing repairs and maintenance in a heavy equipment or construction environment.
- Previous experience mentoring or supporting junior mechanics considered an asset.
- Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple repairs in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license required; Class 1 or 3 considered an asset.
- Ability to work flexible hours and respond to emergency breakdowns when required.
