Position Summary
The Shop Foreman is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the heavy equipment shop while actively participating in maintenance and repair activities. This role provides frontline leadership to mechanics, apprentices, and shop personnel, ensuring equipment repairs, preventative maintenance, and inspections are completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards. The Foreman coordinates workflow, prioritizes repairs based on operational needs, and works closely with the Shop Manager and field operations to minimize equipment downtime and support project requirements. This position requires strong mechanical knowledge, leadership ability, and the ability to balance hands-on work with crew supervision and operational coordination.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Crew Supervision
- Supervise, direct, and support mechanics, apprentices, and shop personnel in daily shop operations.
- Assign and prioritize work orders to ensure repairs and maintenance are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with operational deadlines.
- Monitor productivity, workmanship, and repair quality while providing mentorship and on-the-job training to junior staff.
- Promote a positive, safety-focused, and team-oriented work environment.
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
- Perform and oversee diagnostics, repairs, servicing, and preventative maintenance on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and small engine equipment.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine issues while supporting mechanics with technical guidance as required.
- Ensure inspections, repairs, and maintenance records are completed accurately and equipment is safe and operational before returning to service.
- Assist with emergency repairs and breakdown response as required.
Shop Operations
- Coordinate daily shop workflow to support equipment turnaround times and operational requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop and yard environment.
- Assist with monitoring inventory levels and coordinating parts, deliveries, and external repair services as required.
- Ensure tools, shop equipment, and service vehicles remain in safe working condition.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies, regulatory requirements, and safe work practices within the shop and yard.
- Conduct hazard assessments, participate in safety meetings, and support incident investigations as required.
- Ensure proper use of PPE, tools, and equipment and verify equipment is safe before returning to service.
Communication & Coordination
- Maintain regular communication with the Shop Manager, Superintendents, and field crews regarding equipment status and repair timelines.
- Provide updates on equipment availability, ongoing repairs, and priority issues.
- Support coordination between shop operations and field requirements to minimize downtime and operational disruptions.
Administration
- Complete and review work orders, inspection reports, maintenance logs, and related documentation.
- Assist with tracking labour hours, repair timelines, and preventative maintenance schedules.
- Support the Shop Manager with operational reporting and shop planning as required.
Requirements
- Red Seal Truck and Transport Technician certification (preferred) or Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician certification
- Strong working knowledge of heavy equipment, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and diagnostics.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a heavy equipment or construction shop environment.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple repairs in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid class 5 driver’s license required; Class 1 or 3 considered an asset.
- Ability to work flexible hours and respond to emergency breakdowns when required.
