Job Duties

The Legal Services and Hearings Officer I assists the Manger of the Discipline Unit in ensuring the proper administration of inmate disciplinary procedures in DOC facilities through:
• providing assistance via email, correspondence, and phone to operations staff on a daily basis;
• assisting in the monitoring and analysis of appeal referrals;
• processing incoming and outgoing mail;
• entering data into the Disciplinary Appeals database;
• reviewing and drafting disciplinary appeal responses for each Regional Administrator's review and signature;
• maintaining and tracking all incoming Disciplinary Appeals;
• filing and maintaining completed Disciplinary Appeal packets for litigation purposes;
• conducting training as needed;
• conducting site visits as needed; and
• will assist the Legal Compliance Manager as needed.

This is a wage (hourly) position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

Exceptional organizational skills and experience managing multiple assignments at a time. Experience analyzing and applying rules and regulations to evaluate evidence and information. Effective oral and written communication skills. Experience taking initiative on unit projects. High school diploma or equivalent.

Additional Considerations

Considerable knowledge of Virginia Department of Correction (VADOC) Inmate Discipline Procedure.
