Job Duties

The Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) provides evidence-based recovery-oriented peer support to adult male participants in the 75-bed Aftercare Program and the 75-bed Voluntary Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program at Green Rock Correctional Center.

Drawing on lived recovery experience and established peer-support practices, the position promotes engagement, recovery capital, personal responsibility, and continuity of care.
The CPRS complements, but does not replace, clinical treatment and does not conduct formal clinical assessments. The position supports individuals during treatment, transition from residential programming to the general population, and connection to community-based recovery and health services upon release.

Continued employment beyond the RSAT grant period is contingent upon the availability of ongoing or alternative funding.

Minimum Qualifications

Completed Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist training
Demonstration of ongoing personal recovery growth.
Willingness to share personal experiences as it relates to recovery.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to reflect optimism of an inmate's ability to enter recovery and sustain recovery.
Ability to engage difficult to reach individuals.
Ability to identify an inmate's stage of change.
Demonstration of ethical responsibility, boundaries, and confidentiality as a PRS.
Ability to support all pathways in recovery.
Experience with PRS documentation including utilization of recovery language.

Additional Considerations

Certified Peer Recovery Specialist trainer
PRS expertise with justice systems
Experience working with individuals who have justice involved histories
Experience with data entry and documentation
