Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine
We are seeking an experienced Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine (ICU) to establish a small critical care capability. This is a rare opportunity to develop a new high-quality critical care service in an internationally accredited private hospital offering outstanding care.
The ideal candidate will have extensive critical care experience and other specialist expertise (eg pulmonology, cardiology, neurology, emergency medicine, or other). Experience setting up a service is desirable.
The envisaged service will support short term care (typically less than 48 hours) and not patients requiring longer term ventilatory support or with multi-organ failure. Typical patients will need post-procedure care after cardiac catheterization, stroke, or general surgical procedures.
Job Purpose
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of critically ill patients.
- To share, with colleagues, responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Intensive Care Unit and referrals to the Intensive Care Service.
- To actively participate in continuing medical education (CME).
- Fulfill duties of the weekly timetable including any out-of-hours responsibilities.
Principal accountabilities:

- Provision, with Consultant colleagues, of an intensive care service with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
- Development of the critical care capability including preparation of pathways and protocols.
- Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in the Consultant on-call rota
- Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences.
- Participating in medical audit, the clinical quality improvement, and in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
- A responsibility to work co-operatively with colleagues and to respect and value their contribution to patient care.
- The post-holder is responsible for data quality and complying with the policies, procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the hospital.
- The post-holder will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
- The post-holder will be required to participate in the annual professional practice evaluation process.
- The post-holder will be required to complete annual updates in mandatory training.
- Any other duties that may be required from time to time.
Qualifications / Knowledge Requirements:
- Medical Degree (MD or equivalent) from a recognised institution
- Completion of a specialist training programme in Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia with Critical Care
- A minimum of 5 years post-residency practice experience in busy high-acuity Intensive Care Unit settings.
Registration Eligibility:
- Must be eligible for medical registration in the Cayman Islands. (Registration, without additional examinations, is available for applicants who have completed specialist training and are registered in Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, or the USA.)
Travel:
None expected.
