The Company’s proprietary genome engineering platform enables extensive, multiplex gene edits to remove key biological barriers, add protective human transgenes, and inactivate endogenous retroviruses. EGEN-2784, a genetically engineered porcine kidney, is the Company’s lead program and is currently being evaluated in a multi-patient Expanded Access study at MGH. eGenesis is headquartered in Cambridge, MA.

The Clinical Veterinarian maintains clinical oversight of the research grade pig population and surrogate herd for the eGenesis site. This role places a strong emphasis on herd health management, disease prevention and clinical decision making to ensure the stability and wellbeing of the pig population. Additionally, this individual will manage personnel of the veterinary team, support in vivo studies and advise on regulatory compliance related to animal activities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead herd health management, including disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment across donor and surrogate pig populations
  • Provide clinical support for surrogate herd including routine medical cases, ultrasound diagnostics according to study designs or for clinical assessments
  • Support epidemiological tracking and disease monitoring to proactively manage population health
  • Evaluate neonate piglets daily and work with neonatal care team to implement treatment plans for any health concerns that arise
  • Perform necropsies and submit diagnostic samples for relevant research and clinical cases to ensure health of donor and surrogate herds or provide findings to development team
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners and vendors to support animal health and sourcing
  • Participate in all surgery activities and advanced reproductive procedures
  • Perform other duties and assume additional responsibilities as assigned
  • Develop a veterinary science department with expansion according to research needs in support of eGenesis xenotransplantation platform
  • Collaborate with veterinarians and leadership across other eGenesis sites to manage veterinary care and population health programs
  • Facilitate staff development in area of laboratory animal science
  • Oversight of Wisconsin barns to meet IACUC standards and USDA regulations
  • Participate in IACUC activities including inspections, advising of team members, interpretation of regulatory requirements, and serving as alternate veterinarian on committee
  • Draft, review, and revise SOPs relevant to the neonatal, veterinary, and general animal care activities
  • Participate in scientific and management meetings with Cambridge and Indiana sites, including donor animal allocation, preclinical development, and regulatory
  • Serve ad hoc on internal eGenesis Publication Committee for review, collaboration, or preparation of manuscripts
  • Develop and provide an annual training program to the Animal care, Neonatal and Vet tech team to assure compliance with animal welfare regulations and animal treatment plans
  • Provide personnel management including goal setting, performance reviews, conflict resolution, scheduling and training documentation oversight
  • Ensure compliance with company biosecurity practices to safeguard health of all animals produced by eGenesis
  • Work in collaboration with veterinarians to identify potential biosecurity and husbandry process improvements in the neonatal area
  • Promote and adhere to safety in the workplace and report unsafe acts, ensure equipment is maintained correctly, report all accidents/incidents, inspect work area and take remedial action to minimize or eliminate all hazards.
  • Promote and adhere to the eGenesis animal welfare policies
  • Follow all applicable regulatory requirements (USDA, FDA, OLAW) regarding animal welfare and ensure humane care according to the Guide for the care and use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act
  • Requirements

  • DVM or VMD from AVMA-accredited institution; may substitute completion of ECFVG program for graduates of non-AVMA schools
  • Veterinary license in at least one state; must attain Wisconsin licensure within 6 months of hire
  • DEA Registration for maintenance of controlled drugs on site
  • USDA Accreditation Category II
  • 3-5 years of relevant veterinary experience working with swine, including clinical and herd health management experience
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to manage others
  • Ability to work on call schedule: As essential personnel, occasional animal work outside of normal business hours or availability for emergency response may be required but very limited
  • ACLAM board certification or residency training in laboratory animal medicine with eligibility to take ACLAM board exam
  • Background in either swine management/research or experience in breeding/neonate management of any species. Significant swine medicine experience desired.
  • 1-3 years of management experience
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands or arms, lift, and operate a computer.  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust to focus. The employee frequently is required to lift laboratory supplies and equipment within the daily routine. The employee will be required to handle and work with large animals on a daily basis. 
     
    This position will be required to shower-in into the animal facility to perform the required tasks.  This position operates in multiple environments, including office, laboratory, and animal husbandry environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
