As an Ion Trap Engineer (f/m/d), you will be part of a team with a mission to develop, set up and operate our trapped-ion quantum computers and relevant test devices. You will collaborate closely with our international team of physicists and engineers from different disciplines. Depending on your level of experience, you will work on one or more of the following tasks:  

  • Operate our quantum computers based on trapped ions 

  • Perform experiments in a laboratory environment and apply the results to the development of a mature product 

  • Assemble ion trap quantum computer hardware 

  • Characterize ion trap quantum computers with state-of-the-art experiments and measurement techniques in a laboratory environment 

  • Analyze and optimize the performance of our quantum computers  

  • Participate in hands-on R&D work 

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Physical Chemistry, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience

  •  Experience in AMO physics experiments, including lasers, laser cooling, laser spectroscopy, optics, microwaves, and vacuum systems

  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: photonics, linear and nonlinear optics, high-frequency electronics, cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum systems, opto-electronics, and electrodynamics

  • Fluent written and spoken English skills

  • Creative, collaborative, and comfortable working in multicultural and interdisciplinary teams

  • German language skills are an advantage 

  • Hands-on experience with other quantum computing platforms, including superconducting qubits, spin qubits, NV center systems, and photonics-based platforms  

  • Independent mindset, readiness to learn and to apply new software and hardware skills
