Ophthalmic Tech - Ephraim McDowell Eye & Vision Clinic - Full Time - 1st Shift

Under the guidance of the Provider or Manager, the Ophthalmology Tech will perform a variety of routine tests as well as documenting patient medical histories. May assist the Provider in minor surgical procedures. Must provide customer service in a friendly, courteous, professional manner. Responsibilities
~2 min read- →Coordinate scheduling of patient appointments and surgeries.
- →Interview patients and document ocular and medical histories.
- →Perform a variety of routine tests using ophthalmic instruments that provide diagnostic information including, but not limited to, intraocular pressures, basic motility, visual fields, PAM and BAT, OCT tests, A-Scan ultrasonography and fundus photography.
- →Assist the physician during diagnostic and minor surgical procedures, including instrumentation, sterile preparations and documentation.
- →Administer topical medications or diagnostic drugs as required by the provider for testing or treatment.
- →Assists providers with patient examinations, procedures, treatments and administration of medications within the guidelines of their scope of practice as directed by the provider. This includes checking in and signing out of sample medications to be given to the provider for appropriate dispensing and documentation of the medication to the patient.
- →Will have access to the locked storage area where sample medication is stored as needed.
- →Prepare and position patients for diagnostic tests and procedures.
- →Assist the physician with patient education pertaining to the treatment prescribed.
- →Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- →Record patient charges for the billing department.
- →Prepare procedure and exam rooms; inventory equipment and supplies; replenish supplies and equipment.
- →Perform basic triage per specific office protocol procedures.
- →Maintain professional appearance and personal conduct at all times.
- →Adhere to employer work practices as described in the Technical Data Center Occupational Exposure Plan policy.
- →Work as a team member within the ophthalmology department and all other departments.
- →Document work processes as required.
- →Perform other duties as assigned.
Works in a well-lighted, ventilated and air conditioned area. Often exposed to unpleasant odors, sights and sounds. Long periods in a stationary position and moving around the unit are required. There are risks of exposure to disease and infection. The task of this job does not involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, but employment may require performing supplemental tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. Must be able to move or position 25 lbs. independently.
Patients, family members and significant others, physicians and Associates, other health care providers, community personnel, administrative staff and Medical Center support services.
- Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic disease affecting the eye.
- Knowledge of ultrasound and visual field machines.
- Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage interactions with difficult people.
- Knowledge of CPT & ICD-10 coding procedures.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
Minimum of one (1) years’ experience in an ophthalmology setting required.
