JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Parent as Teachers – Parent Educator/Home Visitor
Location: Erie Family Center, Erie Office
- This position is based out of Erie, PA and is to service families residing in Erie, Crawford(as needed) and W Warren (as needed) counties.
- Moderate travel with mileage reimbursement.
Reports to: Parent as Teachers Supervisor
Schedule: Flexible work schedule may include occasional evenings and weekends.
Parent as Teachers - Parent Educator/Home Visitor Job Description:
Parents as Teachers is a free parent education and support program. Parent educators provide
coaching and one-on-one support to families. The four main components of the program are:
Personal visits:
Parent educators' partner with families to set an agenda for each personal visit. Research-informed
information is shared by the parent educator to promote parenting behaviors that encourage positive
parent-child interactions and provide concrete supports for families in times of need. Parent educators
empower parents to be the observers of their child's development and reflect on their family’s
well-being.
Groups:
Parent educators facilitate group connections and create a network where parents learn from each
other, support one another, and grow as parents together.
Screenings:
Regular screenings during personal visits help make sure children are healthy, safe, and developing
on track. Parent screening increases family engagement and identifies places for referral and
goal setting.
Resources:
Parent educators make the introductions and references for families to connect with other valuable
resources and agencies.
Qualification Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, social work, psychology, or a related field is preferred.
- Candidate must have 2 or more years of work experience supporting, collaborating, goal planning and documented home-visiting experience with children and families.
Employment Requirements: The candidate must pass a Criminal Record History Clearance, FBI and Child Abuse History Clearance, possess a valid PA Driver's License and must pass a physical exam and drug screening.

Work Expectations:
- Certification and implementation of the National Parents as Teachers curriculum to fidelity.
- Provide families with visits within the family home or current residence.
- Timely submission of required program documentation and reporting.
- Referral and coordination of service with other community program with similar purposes to support the family’s individual needs.
- Attend any required in-service trainings such as car seat training, developmental screening training and mandated reporter training as needed.
- Maintain proper caseload and complete required number of visits/screenings for families as determined by PAT program.
- Participate in monthly reflective supervision meetings.
- Complete required number of professional development hours annually.
Additional expectations:
- The ability to interact with a diverse population of individuals and families professionally and positively.
- Administer and assist in reviewing and evaluating results of annual parent surveys and other evaluative measures.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- High commitment to respect and confidentiality of family information and case details with adhering to a confidential ethics among those who are on a need-to-know basis.
- Building relationship-based partnerships with staff, community, families and clients.
- High commitment with respect to cultural responsiveness and providing a culturally sensitive atmosphere for staff, families and community.
- Support and enhance PAT group connections and when required attend community events for the center.
- Tolerance for working in an active environment with many adults and children present.
- Ability to switch to a virtual format without changing the integrity of the parent coaching session.
- PAT- PE will attend monthly staff and collaborative agency team meetings and training as assigned at the Erie Family Center- Erie-Office.
- Able to adapt to physical requirements to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods, occasionally requires the ability to stoop, bend, lift and reach.
- The capacity to work supportively and effectively in a team environment, as well as take initiative independently with various tasks and exhibit proven project management skills.
- Strong observation, communication and writing skills to clearly convey information in writing and in person. (e.g., nonjudgmental, objective, reflective, empathic, patient, tactful)
- Program may require travel in and out of Erie County and Pennsylvania.
- Moderate travel between counties for home-visitations.
- Complete various tasks assigned by Executive Director or Supervisor.
