Storion Energy is hiring a Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer to join our corporate engineering team in Alpharetta, GA. Storion is a battery component manufacturer specializing in vanadium electrolyte production and assembly of stack-power assemblies that serve the flow battery industry in the US. We strive to drive flow battery adoption through cost effective, readily available electrochemistry components required in large scale flow batteries.
Reporting through the manufacturing engineering team, you will directly support the design, development, and continuous improvement of manufacturing equipment and processes. You will work alongside chemical, electrical, and controls engineers as we scale a novel production process from pilot to full operations and support the future expansion of deployed manufacturing sites. We expect a blend of hands-on mechanical design capability and practical process engineering judgment.As a small company, there are always opportunities to make a difference and grow. Responsibilities
~2 min readMechanical Design & Equipment Engineering
- →Support mechanical design packages for existing and new production equipment associated with Storion Manufacturing
- →Convert process requirements into mechanical specifications for production equipment
- →Design mechanization for integrated and stand-alone assembly equipment
- →Design and build tooling, workholding, and jigs for manufacturing workcells
- →Design pneumatic and electrical circuitry to support equipment mechanization, including component specifications
- →Produce 3D models and 2D drawings of parts and assemblies
- →Demonstrate concepts through sketches, mock-ups, and prototypes
- →Produce/Build/Assemble prototypes using in-house 3-axis CNC, laser cutter, 3D printers, and other manual machining techniques
- →Inventory and maintain in-house machine tooling stock
- →Validate designs through testing and trials
- →Apply engineering best practices for modeling and/or design of experiments to limit design iterations
- →Perform analytical work associated with mechanical engineering: static and dynamic stress analysis, FEAs, etc.
Continuous Improvement & Project Execution
- →Manage manufacturing and facility projects, including establishing deliverables, distributing RFQs, planning, selecting resources, tracking budget constraints, and ensuring on-time completion
- →Lead efforts in continuous improvement to reduce setup time, reduce scrap, improve processing, and increase product yield
- →Support equipment redesign efforts targeting business CAPEX and OPEX objectives
- →Develop upgrade plans for manufacturing equipment and support rollout across similar equipment
- →Specify and validate component selections in equipment designs and for plant operations
- →Identify and implement cost reduction opportunities while maintaining or improving quality standards
Operations & Technical Support
- →Develop a thorough understanding of the processes at our facilities
- →Assist in the design and implementation of process improvements with a hands-on approach
- →Support maintenance department personnel in training and equipment re-engineering activities
- →Develop relationships with external equipment vendors and suppliers
- →Isolate critical data outputs of the process and define indicators of key process performance
- →Generate and maintain documentation, including files, revisions, and edits
- →Foster strong relationships with members of the product engineering team, operations team, and vendors
- →Work at all levels across the organization
Requirements
~2 min readEducation, Experience, Certifications:
- BS or greater in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 2–5 years of hands-on experience in process or manufacturing engineering
- Experience in a manufacturing or industrial facility is preferred
- Six Sigma certification is a strong plus
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in 3D modeling; SolidWorks preferred
- Experience with CAM generation; MasterCAM preferred
- Understanding of fundamental design calculations and techniques
- Proficiency in generating applicable tolerances and tolerance analysis tools
- Ability to work with and operate a manual end mill, 3-axis CNC, CNC laser cutter, and 3D printing
- Capability to work with and write programming languages; Python preferred
- Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and database software
Competencies:
- Demonstrated ability to analyze processes for improvements in efficiency, product quality, equipment layout, workflow, and safety
- Experience developing training and technical documents to present and/or instruct others on new process changes or machine modifications
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Hands-on mentality with willingness to work on the production floor
- Proven record of operating independently with minimal supervision
Work Environment
- You will work in both office and manufacturing environments. Battery components manufacturing employs chemicals, heat, and heavy equipment, and as such, you will at times be exposed to fumes, noise, dirt, hazards, and chemicals, and in all cases, you will be provided with appropriate PPE.
- You must be able to see, hear and speak; able to sit, stand for at least two hours at a time, sit, bend, crawl, squat, kneel and climb; able to use both arms and hands to use a computer and peripherals and lift 40 pounds from floor level; able to work below ground level in confined spaces and on stationary or mobile elevated platforms; able to wear respirator and other personal protective equipment (PPE) as required; able to climb stairs.
- Travel may be required for this position, but not more than 25%.
