  • The General Pediatrician independently evaluates, diagnoses, and manages a medically complex, high-acuity patient population, exercising clinical judgment across the full scope of practice in collaboration with the pediatric neuro-oncology faculty.
  • Treatment Planning and Orders: Develops, reviews, and modifies chemotherapy and targeted therapy treatment plans, roadmaps, orders, and supportive care protocols with neuro-oncology faculty and oncology pharmacy, adjusting for protocol requirements, disease status, toxicities, and patient-specific factors.
  • Clinical Triage and Acute Management: Assesses patient and family concerns by phone and patient portal, including new neurologic changes, treatment toxicities, medication side effects, and suspected progression; determines disposition, orders diagnostic studies, prescribes, and initiates treatment.
  • Complex Care Management: Directs symptom management (pain, nausea, neurologic and endocrine complications) and integrates the medical plan across infusion, palliative care, rehabilitation, neurosurgery, neurology, endocrinology, radiation oncology, and outside facilities to prevent avoidable emergency visits, admissions, and treatment interruptions.
  • Targeted Therapy and Clinical Trials: Provides longitudinal management of patients on targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and clinical trials; interprets laboratory and imaging results, grades adverse events, and implements dose modifications while maintaining protocol compliance.
  • Peer-to-Peer Review and Appeals: Conducts or prepares peer-to-peer reviews with insurance medical directors for advanced imaging, molecular testing, targeted agents, proton radiation, trial-related procedures, and supportive care with clinical and evidence-based justification.
  • Direct Patient Care: Sees neuro-oncology patients in clinic for on-treatment, toxicity, and acute visits.
  • Clinical Leadership: Serves as the clinical resource for nurse care coordinators on issues requiring medical assessment; develops care pathways and workflows; participates in neuro-oncology tumor board and quality improvement.
  • Serves as covering provider for the Doernbecher Infusion Center, including approximately one weekend per month.
  • Evaluates and manages acute issues arising during treatment, including hypersensitivity and infusion reactions, chemotherapy and immunotherapy side effects, fever, and new symptoms; determines need for escalation, transfer, or admission.
