The RF Communications Supervisor position is responsible for team development, technical leadership, and supervising the communications group. Responsible for the quality and timeliness of deliverables and implementation planning and execution. Responsible for compliance with existing ASC and Information Technology policies/procedures and direction.

Responsibilities

  • Must have a solid understanding of logical and systematic troubleshooting techniques.
  • Must have an excellent command of computers and software used in modern radio communications for systems control and equipment programming.
  • Supervise the installation, maintenance, and repair of H/F radio equipment and systems.
  • Supervise the installation, maintenance, programing, and repair of VHF land mobile, base station, and hand-held radios.
  • Supervise the installation, maintenance, and repair of paging systems.
  • Supervise the maintenance and repair of power regulation systems and UPS units.
  • Supervise the installation, maintenance, programming and repair of VHF/UHF remote repeater radio systems.
  • Schedule annual performance tests on USAP antenna systems.
  • Supervise the maintenance of L-band, C-band, and KU-band satellite communications systems.
  • Supervise the maintenance of analog and digital microwave radio equipment, associated multiplexers, and order wire systems.
  • Supervise the installation and maintenance of analog to digital and digital to analog interface equipment.
  • Administer annual departmental inventory and re-supply ordering.
  • Provide team assistance to project engineering for installing and testing new communications systems.
  • Supervise the maintenance and installation of remote hybrid power generation equipment.
  • Provide maintenance of facilities at remote locations.
  • Provide scheduling and allocation of communications assets for the science community.
  • Organize and lead traverses to and from remote field sites.
  • Work with engineers to diagnose and repair hardware problems in lab environments.
  • Document and communicate status, procedures, and plans.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to lift 70 lbs.
  • Excellent English communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Documentation writing skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision and in a team environment.
  • Responsible for project implementation and delivery. This includes implementation tasking and scheduling. Prepare and maintain project and service records and reports and correspondence per ASC and IT policies and procedures as assigned.
  • Ensures that assigned deliverables are accomplished to acceptable levels of quality and performance on schedule.
  • Provides professional technical leadership to staff to establish a working environment consistent with Division goals and objectives. Encourages professional development, performance evaluations, team building, coordination, and cooperation.
  • Works with management to determine project staffing and resource allocation requirements.
  • Responsible for managing staff as assigned by IT Management. Oversees and assigns daily tasking of staff. Responsible for implementing Information Technology standards, policies, and procedures for the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) as related to and required by the responsibilities of the assigned WBS.
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority on the jobsite.
  • Handles confidential matters (e.g., management reports) in accordance with management policy.
  • Required to attend any planning and reporting meetings with IT and Station Leadership as deemed necessary.
  • May be required as deemed necessary to serve as a backup to the IT&C Manager in any and all capacity if the IT Manager is absent or incapacitated.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree required. Degree in Computer Science or related field strongly preferred. Equivalent experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Applicable technical and professional certifications preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience as a Technical Lead or Supervisor.
  • Project management experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational, verbal/written communication skills and leadership ability required.
  • The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations, and psychological examination, as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.
  • Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedures.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required. (As required by the United States National Science Foundation)
