Why Great Gray?
At Great Gray Group, we strive to set the bar for the retirement services industry. Our goal is to deliver advanced retirement solutions that combine our core fiduciary services with robust investment options, innovative technology, and dedicated client service. We focus on making choices clearer, transitions smoother, and the client experience more delightful. Complacency isn't in our vocabulary. Every day, we look for opportunities to better serve our clients, be an excellent business partner, and earn the trust of those who rely on us.

Great Gray is looking to add a Director of Product to own the data and experience strategy for a key segment of our retirement investment ecosystem. This role sits at the intersection of deep stakeholder relationships, data quality, and product outcomes — responsible for understanding how one side of the ecosystem thinks, what they need, and how Great Gray can build products and partnerships that create compounding value for them and across the platform.

This is not a pure management role. You will lead a product sub-team while also running strategic initiatives as a senior individual contributor: shaping solutions, driving roadmap decisions, and building the external relationships that translate into better data access, deeper integrations, and stronger outcomes. The person who thrives here brings a point of view about how their corner of the ecosystem works, earns trust with the stakeholders in it, and builds products that make the broader retirement ecosystem flywheel more powerful.

This position will our Boston, MA office. Great Gray currently supports a hybrid work model with 4 days onsite, and 1 day remote.

Visa sponsorship or transfer of an existing visa is not available for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work directly for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship or transfer.

Responsibilities

~2 min read
  • Own the product strategy and roadmap for your segment of the ecosystem — setting direction, making prioritization calls, and connecting product decisions to measurable outcomes for both your stakeholders and the broader platform.
  • Run high-leverage initiatives as a senior IC — writing specs, shaping data and integration solutions, and working directly alongside engineering, data, and design to drive outcomes, not just oversee them.
  • Build and manage an ecosystem focused team — setting standards, developing talent, and creating the conditions for the team to do its best work.
  • Cultivate deep, trusted relationships with key external stakeholders — translating those relationships into product partnerships that improve data quality, expand integration depth, and create durable mutual value.
  • Represent product in executive conversations and external partner discussions — communicating strategy and tradeoffs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences alike.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of how your stakeholder segment operates within the retirement investment data value chain — where their data originates, how it flows, where it creates friction, and where better products unlock better outcomes.
  • Define success metrics for your initiatives and hold the team accountable to measuring what matters — connecting product decisions to business outcomes and ensuring the team is building the infrastructure to detect progress.
  • Partner closely with the other persona directors to identify where cross-persona data standards and shared infrastructure create compounding value across the platform.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

~2 min read
  • Bachelor’s degree and 8–12 years of product management experience, with at least 3–5 years managing Product Managers or leading a product function -- ideally in fintech, wealthtech, or a data-intensive B2B SaaS environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as both a people leader and a hands-on individual contributor -- comfortable shaping a data model or writing a spec one day and presenting a product vision to a partner executive the next.
  • Track record of building external relationships that translate into better product outcomes; not just gathering feedback, but co-designing solutions, negotiating data access, and creating durable product partnerships. Familiarity with at least one segment of the retirement investment or wealth management ecosystem, with the fluency to earn trust quickly with the stakeholders in it is a plus.
  • Strong foundation in API architecture, data systems, and integration patterns — enough to engage credibly with engineering, challenge technical tradeoffs, and identify where data, integration, or process gaps are creating product limitations.
  • Experience driving a metrics-informed product practice -- defining what good looks like, instrumenting the right signals, and using data to sharpen prioritization decisions.
  • Exceptional communication skills across audiences from technical deep-dives with engineers to strategic narratives for partner executives.
  • Comfortable making good decisions with incomplete information in a fast-moving, low-process environment where building and using the infrastructure often happen at the same time.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset to bring best practice ideas to the team.
  • Your standards reflect our core values: Growth Mindset, Disciplined Curiosity, Grit, Results Ownership, Collaboration.

Great Gray is the leading independent provider of trustee and administrative services to Collective Investment Trusts (“CITs”), with over $370 billion in CIT assets under management, across more than 1,020 funds. We proudly work with more than 80 subadvisors, including leading firms such as AllianceBernstein, American Funds, BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, MetLife, Neuberger Berman, PGIM, PIMCO and Raymond James.

CITs are more than just an investment vehicle. They represent a forward-thinking approach to retirement planning. These tax-exempt, pooled investment vehicles are offered to employer-sponsored retirement plans, like 401(k)s. CITs are comparable to mutual funds, but, because they are tailored for the institutional retirement market, they can offer distinct advantages, including efficient administration and cost-effectiveness. CITs have a history dating back over 90 years; but they have gained favor over the past decade, driven by innovations, and Great Gray has been at the forefront.

Great Gray has consistently delivered year-over-year growth at an above market rate and is investing in the continued development of its core CIT business as well as complementary administrative services and technology solutions for the retirement market.

Madison Dearborn Partners (“MDP”) purchased Great Gray from Wilmington Trust in April 2023. As a result, Great Gray is an independent company owned by funds affiliated with MDP.
