Highway Laborer - Green Lake County
Department: Highway
Location: 570 South Street, Green Lake, WI 54941
Supervisor: Highway Commissioner and/or Patrol Superintendent
Summary
Under general direction, this position is responsible for maintaining State and County Trunk Highways, ditches, and rights-of-way to ensure the safe and efficient flow of traffic throughout Green Lake County. Duties also include performing reconstruction work and assisting with seasonal and emergency operations as needed.
Schedule
This position offers a 4-day workweek with 10-hour shifts, providing flexibility while meeting operational needs. Occasional weekend work and emergency call-ins may be required, particularly during snow removal season.
Duties and Responsibilities
The percentage of time spent on various tasks may vary by season and operational needs. Approximate distribution:
- Snow and ice removal, including installing and removing snow fences – 20%
- Mowing, tree, and brush control – 15%
- Blacktop and shoulder work, including pothole repair – 18%
- Traffic control, including flagging – 8%
- Rubber crack sealing – 10%
- Patrolling highways, clearing debris, and litter pickup – 7%
- Drainage maintenance, including culvert work and hauling gravel – 10%
- Bridge repairs and inspections – 2%
- Operating heavy equipment – 5%
- Building, grounds, and equipment maintenance – 5%
- Other duties as assigned – 5%
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of road construction and maintenance methods, materials, and equipment
- Ability to use transit or GPS for grading and slope determination
- Proficiency with measuring devices, hand and power tools, and heavy equipment such as loaders, graders, dozers, backhoes, and snow removal machinery
- Effective communication skills (oral, written, and hand signals)
- Adaptability to changing conditions and schedules
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and emergency call-ins
- Strong work ethic and positive attitude
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers and the public
Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or GED
- Experience: 1–2 years in road construction/maintenance or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Must possess and maintain a valid CDL (Class A, B, C, D; N endorsement preferred) or obtain within 3 months of hire
Working Conditions
- Physical Demands: Frequent walking, bending, lifting up to 80 lbs, climbing, and operating heavy equipment
- Environmental Demands: Up to 95% outdoor work in varying weather conditions; exposure to noise, vibration, fumes, and hazards associated with mechanical equipment.
