Head-Royce School is seeking qualified and enthusiastic head coaches and assistant coaches for its Fall, Winter, and Spring athletics programs in middle and upper schools. These are seasonal, part-time, non-benefit eligible positions.

Head-Royce is a coeducational, independent K–12 school in Oakland, California, with one of the Bay Area’s leading small-school athletics programs. Our coaches play an important role in supporting the mission of our athletics program.

The mission of the Head-Royce School Athletics program is to:

  • Enrich the mental, physical, social and emotional well-being of all student-athletes
  • Provide equal and equitable opportunities for students to participate in interscholastic athletics
  • Instill lifelong values of character, effort, leadership and community along with sportspersonship, teamwork, commitment & self-discipline

Successful candidates will bring passion, energy, strong sport-specific knowledge, and a genuine commitment to working with student-athletes. Coaches are responsible for creating an inclusive, challenging, and supportive team environment in which students can develop both as athletes and as individuals.

The most qualified candidates will possess the leadership and organizational skills needed to manage a team of motivated, high-performing student-athletes, along with the ability to communicate effectively with students, families, fellow coaches, and the Athletics Department.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead organized, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate practices

  • Teach sport-specific skills, strategies, rules, and expectations

  • Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, accountability, and respect

  • Support the social, emotional, and physical well-being of student-athletes

  • Provide clear and timely communication to athletes, families, and the Athletics Department

  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, competitions, and team-related activities

  • Manage team logistics in partnership with the Athletics Department

  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive team culture

  • Represent Head-Royce School and its athletics program professionally

  • Follow all school, league, and applicable governing-body policies and expectations

Requirements

  • Prior coaching or relevant competitive playing experience

  • Strong knowledge of the applicable sport, including its rules, skills, and strategies

  • Experience working effectively with middle- and/or high-school-aged students

  • Excellent leadership, organization, and communication skills

  • The ability to motivate and connect with today’s student-athletes

  • A commitment to equity, inclusion, and the educational value of athletics

  • Reliability, professionalism, sound judgment, and collaborative problem-solving skills

Required certifications and clearances must be completed before employment begins.

Upper School Team practices generally take place Monday through Friday from approximately 4:00–6:00 p.m., although schedules may vary by sport and level.

Middle School practices are Monday and Thursday, 2:30-4:00 pm for 26-27 School year.  Home competitions are hosted on the Head-Royce campus, and away competitions take place at locations throughout the Bay Area. Some evening or weekend availability may be required.
