Job Description:

Responsibilities

~2 min read

Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Program Coordinator I to work within the Division of Family Health. The incumbent will coordinate activities for the state’s Oral Health work. The incumbent will work closely with dental schools and school-based health centers and the medical facilities that operate them. The incumbent will be responsible for the coordination of project activities involving community-based practice and dental education including the development of training and resources for School-Based Health Center dental programs and medical facilities that operate them. The Program Coordinator I will maintain ongoing external communications with partners and stakeholders; manage consultants and consultant agreements including monitoring progress; develop agendas and maintain notes for work group meetings; and compile required data, track grant progress, and draft progress and performance reports for grant-related activities. The incumbent will also supervise staff.

Dental caries (cavities) is the most common disease of childhood. Oral health is often overlooked for its importance to health – poor oral health is linked to heart disease. It is often overlooked for its impact on school/academic achievement – poor oral health leads to school absences and disruptions. Based on national survey data, it is estimated that over 600,000 children under the age of 18 did not receive dental care in the past 12 months, and only about 40% of children in Medicaid received preventive dental care in the past 12 months. Dental deserts, where there are not enough dentists to treat the number of people in need, are prevalent in NYS, which makes it difficult to meet the needs of children.
