A career at Hitachi Rail will help create a legacy. With operations in every corner of the world, our work goes to the cutting-edge of digital transformation and technology. From the multi-cultural strength of our global organisation to the sustainable and innovative ways we work to bring people together, there’s something for everyone to get stuck into. And that’s where you come in.

We’re looking for an experienced Manufacturing & Design Integration Engineer to join our team at our Newton Aycliffe manufacturing facility.

This is a key engineering role positioned at the interface between Design Engineering and Production, helping ensure that engineering designs translate effectively into the vehicles we build.

You’ll work closely with Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Testing, Commissioning, Supply Chain and Project teams, providing the technical link needed to resolve production and assembly issues, identify improvements and ensure the finished product aligns with the approved design.

We’re looking for someone who brings strong engineering experience, sound technical judgement and the confidence to constructively challenge. You’ll be comfortable offering recommendations, questioning designs or approaches where appropriate, and suggesting practical improvements that support manufacturability, reliability, maintainability and safety.

This is a hands-on, collaborative role where your engineering experience and ability to influence across different teams will make a real difference to our production environment.

  • →Investigate and resolve manufacturing and assembly issues by understanding the design, identifying practical solutions and providing clear technical recommendations.
  • →Review engineering drawings and designs, identifying potential issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • →Support design and build reviews, helping to ensure vehicles are manufactured in line with the approved design.
  • →Provide timely engineering feedback when differences or issues are identified between the design and the built product.

  • →Support reliability, maintenance and safety activities associated with rail vehicle design and production.
  • →Produce clear technical reports to support engineering decisions and corrective actions.

This role would suit an experienced engineer who understands both the design intent and the realities of manufacturing. You’ll be confident working across functions and able to use your experience to influence decisions and recommend solutions.

We’re particularly looking for:

  • Significant experience within rolling stock, rail vehicle design or other complex mobile equipment.
  • Strong understanding of engineering design requirements and the ability to translate these into practical engineering solutions.
  • The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, identify potential issues and recommend design improvements.
  • A good understanding of how rail or transit vehicles operate.
  • Knowledge of reliability, maintenance and failure-analysis methods.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the confidence to challenge constructively and put forward technical recommendations.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across engineering, manufacturing and wider project teams.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with teams based internationally and produce clear technical reports in English.
  • The ability to work independently while remaining aligned with wider engineering and project teams.

Experience using CAD software such as Creo or AutoCAD would be advantageous, alongside professional engineering registration, certification or progress towards registration.
