The BIM Modeling & Detailing Lead will work within the VDC Department. This position will report directly to the Affiliate VDC Manager and VDC Director.  We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented modeler and detailer with a “can-do” attitude to join our innovative VDC team. This role primarily involves supporting our self-perform divisions, which include concrete, rebar, mass timber, wall framing, drywall, and specialty architectural scopes of work. In this role, you will be responsible for creating and managing 3D models and leveraging those models to produce high-quality shop drawings, participate in BIM coordination with other trades, and inform the project team’s plans. You will play a key role in bridging design and field operations, ensuring constructability and accuracy in all modeling efforts. This position will be located at our project site in Boise, ID. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage LOD 400 fabrication-quality 3D Models. 
  • Produce accurate and efficient shop drawings for field use.
  • Interpret design documents, including drawings, models, specifications, needed to develop fabrication models and shop drawings.
  • Manage 3D models to support quantity take-offs (QTOs) and material tracking.
  • Collaborate with field crews to provide visualizations, ensure constructability, and pursue model-to-field workflows.
  • Promote a culture of virtual building among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Review the construction schedule and develop logistics and animated 4D exhibits to use in coordination with the field team.
  • Facilitate and lead coordination meetings between and project team and third-party modeling companies. 
  • Participate in the general contractor's issue tracking platform and manage the resolution of coordination issues. 
  • Meet regularly with the project team to provide updates on VDC activities. 
  • Participate in BIM coordination meetings with project teams, clients, architects, consultants, and subcontractors. 
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of model asset libraries, including standard families and details.
  • Support the integration of VDC technologies into project workflows and construction planning. 
  • Participate in research and development activities relevant to the VDC department. 
  • Attend site visits to support the project team as needed.

Position Related Skills

  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit (Structure or Architecture), AutoCAD, Navisworks, and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  • Proficiency with leveraging BIM and VDC throughout a project’s lifecycle to support project requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret project documents, including drawings and specifications.
  • Strong mathematical skills with the ability to calculate accurate dimensions and quantities.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (read, write, and speak).
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and follow through on assignments.
  • Willingness to take ownership of drawings and models to ensure the highest levels of quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to participate in field coordination meetings at both the main office and construction sites.
  • Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, Visio)

Professional Experience and Education  

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in architectural, engineering or construction (AEC) industry. 
  • Experience in the delivery of large, complex projects preferred. 
  • High School diploma or GED required. 
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Bachelor of Architecture, or equivalent degree and/or equivalent craft level work experience. 

 

  • Standing/Walking/Sitting: Workday is a combination of being stationary and moving about the work location.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs and inspect confined spaces or underground spaces.
  • Hands/Arms: Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Frequently operates machinery and will use hands/fingers and legs to operate, activate, use, prepare, inspect, place, detect and position materials.
  • Sight: Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus in an outdoor environment. Must be able to safely operate a vehicle with a valid driver's license. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; reading printed and digital documents.
  • Hearing: Must be able to work in proximity to loud equipment more than 75% of the time. Must be able to wear hearing protection, as necessary. Often required to communicate with customers and coworkers in an office setting and on the job site. 
  • Speech: Ability to communicate laws, ordinances, plans, regulations, protocols, directives, and standard operating procedures related to project scope in English.
  • Lift/Carry: Must have the ability to lift or manipulate fifty pounds to a height of three feet and carry or push it 50-100 feet. 
  • Bending/Twisting: Frequent.  
  • Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: Must be able to regularly position self in a kneeling, crouching or crawling position for the purpose of examining project work. 
  • Must be able to physically access all areas and levels of construction site for work progress review. 
  • Work schedule must be flexible to allow extended hours or off-shift work to accommodate changing construction schedule and sequences. 
  • Must use independent judgment, and organizational and critical thinking skills to determine best method to accomplish desired results.
