About the Role

~1 min read

Horace Mann is building a structured framework for how software gets developed across the organization, inside IT, across business units, and increasingly with the help of AI. This role stands it up. You'll own the training program, the governance processes, and the day-to-day technical support that lets developers at every level build with confidence and in compliance.

This is a builder role in the truest sense: you'll start with a blank page and end with a functioning program: curriculum, documentation, intake workflows, and a support practice that developers actually want to use.

Responsibilities

~2 min read

In the first six months, you'll primarily be building:

  • Design and develop the tiered developer training program: four cumulative builder tiers (Personal Productivity through Enterprise Solution Lead) plus trigger-based add-on modules covering AI/LLM use, sensitive data handling, privileged access, third-party integrations, and business ownership
  • Document the risk overlay framework: clear, practitioner-facing guidance on what each overlay means, when it applies, and what a developer needs to do differently as a result
  • Build the solution intake and classification process: the workflow that takes a new solution from idea to assigned tier, applied overlays, and approved build path
  • Establish the ongoing compliance model: how training completion is tracked, how access is gated, and how attestations are renewed over time
  • Document development tooling standards and permitted integration catalogs so builders have a single reference for approved tools, registries, and external connections

On an ongoing basis:

  • Provide technical assistance to developers across IT and the business: helping with technical issues both hands-on and through coordination with subject matter experts.
  • Serve as the first point of contact when a developer hits a process or tooling question: triage, resolve, or route to the right team
  • Conduct training sessions, maintain training content as the framework evolves, and track completion against access requirements
  • Execute and maintain intake and compliance processes: solution intake, developer tools, approved packages, and attestations
  • Work with Security, Architecture, Governance, and Data teams to keep overlay documentation and intake processes current as policies and tools change
  • Identify patterns in support requests and use them to improve training content, documentation, and tooling defaults
  • Familiarity with modern software development practices: Git, CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps preferred), package management, secrets management, and deployment fundamentals
  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to audiences with varying levels of experience, from seasoned engineers to first-time business builders
  • Experience designing or delivering technical training, documentation, or enablement programs
  • Comfort working across teams — you'll partner with Security, Architecture, Governance, and business stakeholders regularly
  • Familiarity with AI development tools and platforms (experience with Claude, GitHub Copilot, or similar is a plus)
  • Strong organizational instincts — you'll be managing curriculum, process documentation, a support queue, and compliance tracking simultaneously

Development is no longer confined to IT. AI assistants, low-code tools, and automation platforms have made builders out of people who wouldn't have called themselves developers two years ago. This role exists to make sure that expansion goes well, that the people building solutions have the skills and support they need, that the guardrails are clear and accessible rather than buried in policy documents, and that IT can say “yes” to more development, faster, because the foundation is solid.

Horace Mann was founded in 1945 by two Springfield, Illinois, teachers who saw a need for quality, affordable auto insurance for teachers. Since then, we’ve broadened our mission to helping all educators protect what they have today and prepare for a successful tomorrow.  And with our broadened mission has come corporate growth:  We serve more than 4,100 school districts nationwide, we’re publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange (symbol: HMN) and we have more than $12 billion in assets.

We’re motivated by the fact that educators take care of our children’s future, and we believe they deserve someone to look after theirs.  We help educators identify their financial goals and develop plans to achieve them.  This includes insurance to protect what they have today and financial products to help them prepare for their future. Our tailored offerings include special rates and benefits for educators.
