Indiana University Health is looking for passionate, current nursing students to join our team and collaborate with top medical professionals at the Adult Academic Health Centers. These locations include IU Health Methodist Hospital or IU Health University Hospital, both located in Downtown Indianapolis.  The hospitals treat our adult patient population. Candidates must have completed a Fundamentals of Nursing course that generally aligns with their first clinical rotation.

The Patient Care Intern (PCI) works under the direction of the registered nurse (RN) as a non-licensed team member.  As a non-licensed team member, the PCI provides care to designated patients and supports the patient care team. Job duties include observation of the registered nurse, provision of activities of daily living, mobility assistance, mobility assistance, continuous observation including suicide prevention, and ensuring the patient's surroundings are clean and orderly.

PCI positions are generally Part Time or PRN, and your shifts can be worked around your school schedule.  

Potential Start Dates: December 2025, January 2026

  • Med Surg, PCU, and ICUs from the Adult Neuro, Ortho, Cardiopulmonary, Multispecialty Surgical, Behavioral Health, Medical, Transplant, Oncology and Emergency Services units.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Requires 0-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Requires PCIs to be actively enrolled in an accredited nursing education program, with at least one semester of student nursing completed. This program must be accredited by a national organization such as the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). 
  • Requires that all candidates have completed Nursing Fundamentals in nursing school
  • Requires current Basic Life Support certification through the AHA or attainment at the completion of the IU Health PCA education program. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • Requires knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of the patients served.
  • Requires ability to apply the organization's personnel policies and procedures.
  • Requires up to date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
  • Requires proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Requires ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent and varied interruptions and variable noise levels.
  • Requires ability to organize tasks and attend to details.
  • Requires knowledge of procedures; equipment; software and standards related to patient care activities that non-licensed role perform (i.e.. PCI, PCA, PCR).
  • Requires ability to perform physically demanding, repetitious movements.
  • Requires knowledge of principles of infection control.
