We are seeking a Purchasing Manager to lead a growing purchasing function for a family-owned U.S. wholesale distributor of construction and building-materials supplies operating multiple branches. This is a "player-coach" role — a strategic purchasing lead who still does hands-on work, owning the why and the standards while executing the day-to-day, with a 6–12 month ramp into full authority. It's a higher-level seat than a traditional buyer; a junior admin/support role will be added later to take on routine volume, but at first this person carries both the strategic and hands-on work.

What you'll do

• Inventory & stock management — Govern data-driven replenishment and lead major stocking decisions (new items and lines, larger buys, discontinuations), treating inventory as an investment that must earn its return. Own the purchasing budget.
• Special orders, expediting & vendor accountability — Place and expedite special orders, proactively communicate lead-time changes, and source alternatives when a vendor falls short. Price on true landed cost (item + freight + total). Hold vendors accountable and score their performance; pursue better deals and terms, including pushing back on unwarranted price increases.
• Online catalog operations at scale — Own the vendor/item data pipeline feeding the e-commerce catalog (content, descriptions, pricing, lead times) for the tech team to publish. Keep templates current as vendors change and build scalable processes to load, update, and retire items and vendors. Contribute the purchasing side of an EDI integration.
• Item data & hygiene — Set and hold the standard for how items are created, standardized, categorized, and priced (landed cost). Author the SOPs that keep catalog data clean at scale.
• Operational support — Handle inbound vendor calls on a dedicated purchasing line, resolve PO discrepancies and drop-ship issues, and route other traffic to the right owner (sales, accounting, etc.).
• Strategic vendor management — Run deliberate, goal-aligned reviews (QBR-style) with key and high-potential vendors, treating them as joint business plans across pricing, freight, drop-ship, consignment, co-op, and line growth.

What you'll bring

• 5+ years of real purchasing/procurement experience
• SAP experience (especially SAP Business One) is a meaningful plus and shortens ramp time, but it's trainable — not a hard filter
• Comfortable with Excel/reporting and willing to use AI tools already part of the workflow
• Comfortable collaborating with a technical team on systems/integration work as a contributor
• Strong memory and note-keeping for details like lead times, vendor contacts, order status, and specs
• Steady and even-keeled under pressure they can't fully control; not prone to panic, control-seeking, or people-pleasing
• Pleasant, but candid and firm with vendors and colleagues alike
• Data over ego — looks at the numbers before reacting, comfortable being shown they're wrong
• Genuinely enjoys saving the company money and chases margin when no one's watching
• Thinks like an investment steward — can build a simple risk/reward case for a buy and brings the right people into big decisions
