Media Systems Engineering Technician

The Media Engineering Technician supports the Media Engineering team in the installation, maintenance, deployment, and operation of LAIKA’s professional media systems and production environments. Working under the direction of the Media Systems Engineers, this position provides hands-on technical support for conference room AV systems, editorial suites, recording and machine rooms, screening and review rooms, dailies playback systems, and other production media environments.  

The Media Engineering Technician assists with system installations and upgrades, routine maintenance, equipment deployment, room readiness, and troubleshooting while developing knowledge of professional media systems, workflows, and engineering practices. 

• Assist media systems engineers with the installation, deployment, maintenance, and operation of professional audio, video, computer, display, projection, digital cinema playback, and AV-control systems. 
• Install and replace equipment according to engineering designs and documentation; assist with equipment racks, cable routing, dressing, labeling, and organization.  
• Perform routine preventative maintenance, equipment checks, cleaning, color calibration, software and firmware updates, and equipment replacement according to established procedures and standards.  
• Assist the Media Systems Engineering team with system upgrades, equipment moves, commissioning, testing, and other engineering projects.  
• Perform initial troubleshooting and diagnostic work, including equipment swaps, cable and signal testing, configuration checks, and information gathering; escalate findings to media systems engineers as appropriate.  
• Prepare screening rooms, review rooms, editorial spaces, recording environments, and other media systems for production use, screenings, presentations, and special events, and provide technical assistance as needed.  
• Assist with equipment receiving, preparation, deployment, inventory, tracking, storage, and lifecycle activities.  
• Maintain accurate equipment records, cable labels, rack documentation, work logs, technical spaces, tools, and spare equipment inventories.  
• Understand and apply established media engineering designs, technical standards, procedures, documentation, and change-management practices.  

• 1-2 years demonstrated hands-on experience in AV technology, media production, post-production, broadcast, live events, electronics, IT support, or a related technical field.
• Experience or education in film, animation, television, post-production, broadcast, live production, commercial AV, electronics, or a related technical environment, preferred.  
• Foundational knowledge of AV systems, signal flow, cabling, common media connections, and professional AV equipment.  
• Hands-on experience installing, connecting, maintaining, or troubleshooting computers, AV equipment, professional media equipment, or similar technologies.  
• Familiarity with cable installation, management, labeling, testing, and basic termination practices.  
• Basic familiarity with operating systems (MacOS, Windows, and/or Linux systems) and networking concepts such as Ethernet, IP addressing, switches, and network connectivity.
• Ability to read and apply technical instructions, equipment manuals, rack elevations, cable schedules, and signal-flow diagrams, including understanding the purpose of diagrams or procedures.
• Ability to safely use common hand tools, cable tools, test equipment, ladders, carts, and other equipment associated with professional AV installation and maintenance.  
• Strong troubleshooting aptitude with the ability to approach technical problems methodically, gather information, perform directed troubleshooting, and clearly communicate findings.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a technical team, take direction from media systems engineers and media engineering leadership, and ask questions when a direction or its rationale is unclear.  
• Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and customer service skills, including the ability to interact professionally with production, creative users, and technical staff.
• Familiarity with professional media technologies such as Avid, DaVinci Resolve, Blackmagic Design, Q-SYS, Dante, Shure, Extron, or similar systems, preferred.  
• Experience building equipment racks, installing or integrating AV systems, fabricating, or terminating professional cabling, preferred.
