About Last Mile Health

Last Mile Health saves lives in the world's most remote communities. Our vision is a health worker within reach of everyone, everywhere. We partner with governments to recruit, train, equip, and integrate professional community health workers into national health systems, equipping them to deliver quality primary care in rural and remote communities. Founded in Liberia in 2007, we now operate programs in Ethiopia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Malawi. Our global offices are located in Accra, Ghana and in the United States. We are looking for mission-driven leaders to join us as we work to ensure no patient is out of reach.

About the Sierra Leone Program

The Sierra Leone program partners with the Ministry of Health and the CHW Hub to transition the national community health program from strategy to implementation. Led by Carlos Velazquez, the team builds on a foundation of educating health leaders to train and deploy an integrated community health workforce. In addition, they strengthen monitoring and evaluation systems to generate high-quality data while designing upskilling programs to address critical gaps in management and service delivery.

The Role

Last Mile Health (LMH) partners with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health (MOH) to strengthen health systems by ensuring there is a health worker within reach of everyone, everywhere. To achieve this, our work spans from national to districts and communities, alongside collaborating with other stakeholders. In Kambia, LMH works closely with the District Health Management Team (DHMT) to strengthen the Community Health Workers (CHW) program in the district, demonstrating quality improvement practices for an improved CHW management, coordination, and quality service delivery.

The District Field Officer under the guidance of the District Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision and support of Community Health Workers (CHWs) and peer supervisors to deliver high-quality vaccine demand generation, immunization outreaches, and related community-based activities in Kambia District. The role ensures accurate documentation, quality reporting, timely preparation of requests, and effective coordination with the District Health Management Team (DHMT) and other local stakeholders, under the guidance of the District Manager.

This District Officer role is part of Last Mile Health’s (GlaxoSmithKline) initiative to integrate the malaria vaccine into community-based primary healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone.

About the GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) Project

Since the introduction of the malaria vaccine into Sierra Leone in April 2024, routine vaccination of children has been going on with over 12,364 children having received at least one dose of the malaria vaccine. Vaccine rollout has been channelled through the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) primary health care system, leveraging health facilities and staff, with overall management support from the District Health Management (DHMT), EPI, and relevant directorates and program units within MOH.

Despite progress, Sierra Leone's malaria vaccine rollout faces challenges: declining subsequent doses, inadequate reporting and monitoring, and unclear CHW roles. This GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) funded activity leverages CHWs to accelerate rollout in the Kambia district, improving data collection, reporting, and CHW community engagement to boost vaccine uptake.

This position is project-funded, located in Kambia District in Sierra Leone and is open to Sierra Leone nationals. This position will be hired on a 1-year fixed-term renewable contract tied to project timelines.
