Quick Summary

Key Responsibilities

Continuous disc, helical, and interleaved winding redesigns, oil cooling duct arrangements (ONAN/ONAF/OFAF), and leakage flux control.

Our Client is a well-established high voltage engineering firm based in Burnaby, BC. They are looking for a technically sharp and experienced Transformer Design, Redesign and Repair Engineer who genuinely understands what happens inside a transformer not just on paper, but in the field and on the factory floor. You will be the engineering authority on complex diagnostic evaluations, technical redesigns, and commissioning oversight for oil-filled and dry-type transformers up to 150 MVA and 500 kV. This is a pure engineering role no manual trade labour, tool handling, or direct test set operation is involved.

Responsibilities

~1 min read
  • Interpret and validate electrical test data including DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis), SFRA (Sweep Frequency Response Analysis), Tan Delta, Partial Discharge, TTR (Transformer Turns Ratio), and winding resistance against NETA, CSA, and IEEE standards.
  • Assess mechanical active-part condition, degree of polymerisation (DP), furan content, and dielectric oil quality.
  • Author clear and authoritative Engineering Condition Assessment Reports, Root Cause Failure Analysis reports, and detailed Repair Scopes of Work.
  • Prepare factory audit reports, commissioning summaries, and engineering compliance documentation.
  • Execute redesign calculations for oil-filled and dry-type units including rectifier transformers and 12/18-pulse drive configurations.
  • Oil-Filled: Continuous disc, helical, and interleaved winding redesigns, oil cooling duct arrangements (ONAN/ONAF/OFAF), and leakage flux control.
  • Dry-Type: VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnated) and CRT (Cast Resin) winding structures, thermal class insulation coordination (Class H/C), and duct ventilation.
  • Produce engineering markups, bill of materials, and coil winding design cards for workshop remanufacturing and overseas fabrication.

Engineering Supervision

  • Provide technical oversight during workshop active-part de-tanking, core disassembly, coil winding, vapour-phase drying, and final tanking.
  • Conduct site visits across Canada to supervise transformer assembly, radiator and cooler header placement, bushing mounting, vacuum dehydration, oil processing, and pre-energisation checks.
  • Resolve non-conformances and sign off on test results prior to energisation.
  • Adhere to utility safety rules, substation work-protection codes, and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) requirements during all site observations.
  • Travel regularly to China to audit manufacturing quality, inspect winding facilities, and conduct Technical Design Reviews.
  • Witness and verify routine, type, and special FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) at overseas test bays.
  • Serve as the principal bilingual technical interface translating engineering specifications, drawings, test certificates, and NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports) between English and Mandarin.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited Canadian institution or equivalent transferable to EGBC or Engineers Canada licensure standards.
  • Minimum 5 to 8 years of experience in transformer design, redesign, condition assessment, or failure analysis covering 25 kV class distribution and power transformers up to 150 MVA and 500 kV both dry-type and oil-filled.
  • Proven ability to interpret Tan Delta, SFRA, and DGA tests against NETA standards.
  • Strong technical report writing track record Condition Assessments, Root Cause Failure Analysis, and Repair Scopes of Work.
  • Solid familiarity with IEEE C57 series, IEC 60076, NETA, CSA C88, and CSA C9 standards.
  • Full professional fluency in both English and Mandarin Chinese written and verbal is a genuine occupational requirement for this role due to direct technical liaison with overseas manufacturers and translation of engineering documentation.
  • Valid driver's licence, valid passport, and unrestricted eligibility to travel across Canada, the United States, and internationally to China.
  • Must be legally authorised to work in Canada at the time of application.
