Loenbro is seeking a skilled and experienced Coater to join our Coatings Division. The Coater is responsible for performing all aspects of industrial surface preparation, abrasive blasting, and protective coating application on structural steel, piping, equipment, tanks, and industrial facilities. This position requires a strong understanding of coating systems, surface preparation standards, and safe work practices to ensure projects meet quality, production, and customer requirements.

The ideal candidate has experience applying industrial coatings in fabrication, construction, manufacturing, maintenance, or industrial environments and can work independently while maintaining high standards of workmanship, safety, and quality.

 

Responsibilities

  • Prepare steel, piping, equipment, and industrial surfaces for coating using abrasive blasting, power tools, hand tools, grinding, sanding, cleaning, and masking techniques.
  • Perform abrasive blasting and surface preparation activities in accordance with project specifications and SSPC/NACE industry standards.
  • Apply industrial coating systems, including primers, epoxies, zinc-rich coatings, polyurethanes, and specialty protective coatings using spray, brush, and roller methods.
  • Mix and apply coatings according to manufacturer specifications, ensuring proper thickness, coverage, and finish quality requirements are achieved.
  • Inspect surfaces and completed coatings, measure film thickness, identify defects, and perform touch-up or corrective work as needed.
  • Safely operate, maintain, clean, and store blasting and coating equipment, while reporting maintenance or repair needs promptly.
  • Follow OSHA regulations, site safety requirements, PPE standards, hazardous material handling procedures, and environmental compliance practices.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, inspectors, and team members to meet project schedules, maintain quality standards, support training efforts, and complete additional assigned duties.

 

Requirements

  • Minimum 2-4 years of industrial painting experience in construction, fabrication, manufacturing, refinery, mining, power generation, or similar industrial environments.
  • Proven experience with abrasive blasting, surface preparation, and the application of industrial protective coating systems.
  • Working knowledge of SSPC/NACE surface preparation standards and coating industry best practices.
  • Proficiency applying epoxy, polyurethane, zinc-rich, and specialty coatings using brush and roll, conventional spray, and airless spray application methods, as well as conventional coating application equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret coating specifications, product data sheets (PDS), and safety documentation, while maintaining high standards of quality and productivity.
  • Ability to pass respirator fit testing and medical evaluations, and work safely at heights, in confined spaces, and other physically demanding environments.

Nice to Have

  • SSPC/AMPP certification or industrial coatings certification.
  • Experience in structural steel fabrication shops or industrial construction projects.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Aerial lift certification.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with plural-component coating equipment.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

  • Work performed in fabrication shops, industrial facilities, construction sites, and outdoor environments.
  • Regular exposure to dust, abrasive media, paint fumes, chemicals, solvents, noise, and varying weather conditions.
  • Frequent use of respirators and other personal protective equipment.
  • Requires travel to project sites throughout the West Region.

This role requires compliance with all applicable safety regulations, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and Loenbro's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies.
