Main Purpose of Job
The Assistant Commissioner of Correction serves as a senior correctional administrator responsible for assisting the Deputy Commissioner in the management, coordination, oversight, and evaluation of correctional institutions and operational programs within the Central Region. The position functions as a key member of the Department’s executive leadership team and provides strategic guidance and operational support related to institutional safety, security, inmate management, compliance, and operational effectiveness.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Assistant Commissioner acts as a senior advisor to executive leadership on matters involving correctional operations, policy implementation, emergency preparedness, staffing, institutional performance, and regulatory compliance. The position collaborates extensively with wardens, executive staff, state agencies, and departmental leadership to ensure correctional institutions operate in accordance with departmental objectives, legal mandates, accreditation standards, and public safety requirements.\r\n\r\n
POSITION DUTIES
Primary Responsibilities Include:�\r\n\r\n\r\nInstitutional Operations Management\r\n• Assist in planning, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating correctional operations throughout the Central Region.\r\n• Monitor institutional performance to ensure compliance with departmental policies, operational procedures, and legal standards.\r\n• Provide operational guidance and support to wardens and institutional executive teams.\r\n• Conduct regular reviews of institutional operations, security practices, inmate services, staffing, and program effectiveness.\r\n• Assist in identifying operational challenges and implementing corrective action strategies.\r\n\r\n\r\nPolicy Implementation and Compliance\r\n• Assist with the development, interpretation, and implementation of correctional policies and procedures.\r\n• Ensure institutional compliance with state and federal laws, court mandates, accreditation requirements, and departmental regulations.\r\n• Participate in audits, inspections, and operational reviews to evaluate institutional effectiveness and regulatory compliance.\r\n• Recommend operational improvements and policy revisions based on audit findings, incident reviews, and organizational needs.\r\n\r\n\r\nStrategic Planning and Organizational Development\r\n• Support executive leadership in developing long-range operational plans, organizational goals, and performance initiatives.\r\n• Analyze institutional trends, operational data, staffing patterns, and performance metrics to improve operational outcomes.\r\n• Assist with the implementation of organizational initiatives designed to improve safety, security, rehabilitation efforts, and institutional efficiency.\r\n• Promote leadership development, succession planning, and workforce accountability throughout the region.\r\n\r\n\r\nEmergency Management and Security Oversight\r\n• Assist in coordinating responses to institutional emergencies, disturbances, and critical incidents.\r\n• Participate in emergency management planning, preparedness activities, and operational readiness assessments.\r\n• Serve as a senior operational advisor during emergency situations and provide support to institutional command staff.\r\n• Review security procedures, emergency protocols, and incident reports to ensure effective operational responses.\r\n\r\n\r\nCommunication and Stakeholder Relations\r\n• Maintain effective communication with executive leadership, institutional staff, inmates, community stakeholders, and governmental agencies.\r\n• Represent the Department during meetings, committees, conferences, and interagency initiatives.\r\n• Prepare reports, operational summaries, memoranda, policy recommendations, and executive briefings.\r\n• Support collaborative partnerships with criminal justice agencies, courts, law enforcement entities, and community organizations.\r\n\r\n\r\nLeadership and Executive Support\r\n• Serve as a member of the Department’s executive leadership team and contribute to organizational decision-making.\r\n• Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to institutional administrators and management staff.\r\n• Assist the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner in achieving departmental goals and operational priorities.\r\n• Perform other executive-level duties as assigned to support the mission and strategic objectives of the Department.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications to be considered, and to appear on the list of people eligible for hire. Please read all requirements before applying.\r\n\r\nEducation:�A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in corrections, criminal justice, criminology, social work, or a related field.�\r\nExperience:� Seven (7) years of experience supervising or managing in a correctional setting, to include two (2) years performing correctional management duties as a Warden.\r\nNotes:�\r\n1.� Candidates may substitute additional years of experience performing correctional management duties for the required education on a year-for-year basis.��\r\n2.� Thirty graduate credit hours from an accredited college or university in the fields of corrections, criminal justice, criminology, social work, or a related field may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.�\r\n
