North East Region: Harford County\r\nOffice of the State Fire Marshal\r\n2 South Bond Street\r\nBel Air, Maryland, 21014\r\n(Areas of responsibility include:\r\nHarford, Cecil and Carroll Counties)\r\n\r\n\r\nSouthern Region: Calvert County\r\nOffice of the State Fire Marshal\r\n200 Duke Street\r\nPrince Frederick, Maryland 20678\r\n(Areas of responsibility include:\r\nCalvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties)\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is the aggressive enforcement of State Laws in the field of fire and explosive investigation, enforcement of the State Fire Prevention Code and public fire safety education and prevention.

POSITION DUTIES

Conduct fire investigations to determine the cause and origin of a fire.\r\n\r\n\r\nConduct fire safety inspections of commercial, institutional, industrial, educational, medical and storage facilities to assure compliance with the State Fire Prevention Code in the areas of: prevention of fires; storage, sale and use of combustible solid, liquids or gas form; installation and maintenance equipment for fire control, detection and extinguishment; means and adequacy of exit in case of fire from buildings and other places where people work, live, or congregate from time to time for any purpose, except those buildings used wholly as dwelling houses containing no more than two families.\r\n\r\n\r\nAttend in-service training as well as various specialized schools, seminars, and workshops at local, state and national levels in order to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for fire prevention, fire investigation and fire inspection.\r\n\r\n\r\nWitness operational test of fire extinguishing systems, including automatic sprinkler systems and alarm systems.\r\n\r\n\r\nInspect proposed sites for fireworks displays and monitor the displays during the show.\r\n\r\n\r\nPerform other related duties as assigned.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:���Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.\r\nExperience: None. \r\nNotes:\r\n1.�The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with�Public Safety Article, Section 3-207, Annotated Code of Maryland. \r\n2. Candidates must have attended an orientation for this classification in the same year as the recruitment announcement is posted.\r\n3.�Candidates must have successfully completed the functional fitness requirements for this classification conducted by the Maryland State Police.\r\n4.�Candidates must have successfully passed the written test for this classification administered by the Maryland State Police.\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:\r\n\r\n\r\n1. Current, or prior, police training and certification.\r\n\r\n\r\n2. Current, or prior, experience involving fire dynamics and investigation.\r\n\r\n\r\n3. Current, or prior, experience involving inspections and enforcement code.\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification who have not already done so must successfully complete the Entrance Level Police Training Course required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission during the probationary period. \r\n2. Employees in this classification will be required to secure Police Officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission during the probationary period. \r\n3.��Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the\r\nState of Maryland.\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission for a Police Officer in accordance with�Public Safety Article, Section 6-303, Annotated Code of Maryland�or be eligible for comparative compliance training, approved by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. Selection standards for Police Officer training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04 and include the following: \r\nU.S. Citizenship \r\nMust be at least 21 years of age \r\nA completed background investigation, including a check of criminal history \r\nOral interview \r\nPhysical examination \r\nPossession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n2. Employees in this classification will be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis, as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. \r\n3. Employees in this classification are assigned duties in a given service area. \r\n4. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the employer with a phone number where they can be reached. \r\n5. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. \r\n

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process for this recruitment will involve a\r\nreview of each application. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will\r\nbe placed on an eligible list in the BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED or\r\nQUALIFIED category and remain eligible for consideration for at least one year\r\nfrom the date of examination. The list will be used by the hiring manager to\r\nselect the individual to fill the vacancy.\r\n

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your\r\neducation, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.\r\nYou may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may\r\nbe based on your application. Report all experience and education that is\r\nrelated to this position. Applicants may be given a physical examination and\r\nwill be subject to an interview, background investigation, polygraph\r\nexamination and substance abuse testing.\r\n
