Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is the enforcement of State laws in the field of fire \r\nprevention and fire inspection in order to preserve life and protect property from fire and other \r\nemergency conditions.

POSITION DUTIES

Conducts fire safety\r\ninspections of new and existing structures by�identifying the occupancy\r\nclassification, computing the allowable�occupant load, inspecting the\r\nmeans of egress elements, verifying the type�of construction for an\r\naddition or remodeling project to ensure the�structures meet local and\r\nState laws.�\r\n�\r\nConducts fire safety\r\ninspections of facilities that require licenses by other�State agencies,\r\nsuch as health care, public and private schools,�correctional facilities,\r\nday camps and migrant camps to ensure fire�prevention measures are in\r\nplace prior to issuing a license.\r\n�\r\nConducts fire safety\r\ninspections of places of public assembly, such as bars�and restaurants,\r\nexhibition halls, commercial and mercantile buildings,�hotel and motels to\r\nensure public Safety. Inspect and witness licensed�public fireworks\r\ndisplays to ensure public safety.\r\n�\r\nPrepares appropriate\r\ncorrespondence to communicate observations of fire�code violations so that\r\nthe report accurately reflects the findings of the�inspection in\r\naccordance with applicable codes and standards.�\r\n�\r\nMaintains records, files and\r\nrelated documents of inspections in�accordance with record-keeping\r\npolicies and procedures.�\r\n�\r\nOther duties as assigned.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�� Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.\r\nExperience: None. \r\nNotes:\r\n1. Candidates may substitute experience inspecting buildings and other places of public assembly for compliance with fire prevention and safety laws, codes and regulations on a year-for-year basis for the required education.\r\n2.�Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military�service experience as a non-commissioned officer in�Firefighter�classifications or Firefighter specialty codes in the fire inspection field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:\r\n�\r\n1. Experience performing fire safety\r\ninspections in buildings with multiple uses.\r\n\r\n\r\n2. Fire Safety Inspector\r\ncertification\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification are assigned duties in a given service area of the State. \r\n2. Candidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening, a physical examination and a complete criminal background investigation before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction record may be grounds for rejection of the candidate. \r\n3. Employees in this classification must successfully meet the standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1031) for Fire Safety Inspector I prior to completion of the probationary period. \r\n4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. \r\n

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the\r\nminimum qualifications will be considered for this classification. Therefore,\r\nit is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your\r\napplication. Successful candidates will be placed on the Eligible List\r\ncategorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED OR QUALIFIED and remain\r\neligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination.\r\nThe list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees.\r\n

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your\r\neducation, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.\r\nYou may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may\r\nbe based on your application. Report all experience and education that is\r\nrelated to this position.\r\n

BENEFITS

Contractual employees�who work for an agency covered under the\r\nState Employees and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program),\r\nhave a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on\r\naverage 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits\r\ncoverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you\r\nwill be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and\r\nprescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The\r\nState of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these\r\nbenefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and\r\ndismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the\r\nfull premium for these benefits.\r\n
